We have a good size zoo here. It will take a good 3 to 4 hours to visit the whole place. Of course if you dont feel like walking the zoo they do have a train that stops frequently throughout the zoo for you.

New this year for 2007 we will now have Cessna Penguin Cove!!

    Jungle Building Macaw

Every child's fantasy is to open a door and step into another world. Amid the golds, browns, and pale greens of the Kansas prairie, the Jungle building in the Sedgwick County Zoo represents one such world. As I child, I loved pulling open the heavy doors and slipping into the steamy foyer with its we're-not-on-Easter Island-anymore stone tiki guarded by a circle of dripping water. Past that space and through a chain curtain lies a bark-strewn path into a mesmerizingly immersive green-house jungle filled a cacophany of bird calls, the hiss of misters, and the muted thunder of a waterfall. Early on, a rope-and-plank bridge sways from massive wood posts across a misty, bubbling stream. On the other side, the path continues amid exotic plants and free-flying birds past barracudas, golden marmosets, capybaras, and lemurs. Growing up, I especially loved following the path either behind the waterfall or into the bat cave, where blind cave fish and vampire bats awaited. Further on, I would always stop to try to get the parrots to talk and to watch the big ones swim by as I followed the acrylic tunnel through a pool of freshwater tropical fish. Many times I outlapped my parents several times over by the time we met back up in the steamy foyer, excitingly drinking in as much of the sights and sounds of this small but complete world as I could before returning to the windy, open prairie of my hometown.

Sedgwick County Zoo, Old Cowtown Museum, Mid-America All-Indian Center, Art Museum, Botanica...there are many attractions in Wichita, most of them concentrated in a museum district on the riverside.

Shopping is really good, too, with two malls (Towne East is the better one) and institutions like Sheplers, the Western wear outfitters.

There is a regenerated warehouse district, the Old Town, with bars, hotels and restaurants livening up the downtown.

Wichita is home to the Kansas Coliseum, a huge indoor arena that hosts concerts and other events.

The Convention & Visitors Bureau can set you up with all you need for a trip.

The Sedgwick County Zoo is a poor excuse for a zoo! The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo is way better. If you're ever in Nebraska you should go. There are 14,500 more animals and 462 more species in Omaha than Wichita. It's way bigger and way better!

    Sedgwick County Zoo

Wichita has a really amazing zoo considering that this is not an enormous city. It is actually far, far better than the zoo in Kansas City despite the fact that Wichita's population is much smaller than the Kansas City metro area. The Sedgwick County Zoo is a great place to go with a family. Not only are the exhibits easy for little kids to see without being lifted up, but there is a really good petting zoo with more than just your average barnyard animals. My son always loved going to this zoo when we lived in Wichita.

Definitely go see the zoo and make sure you bring your camera.
They have lots of animals there. The bears and the monkeys are especially photogenic.

You can see the monkeys dip sticks in termite hills in their compound and pull them out with insects so they can lick them off and eat them. I had read about that years ago in school but never thought I would see it. The monkeys were actually using a tool. It was very neat.

Again, the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita is a real great asset to the area. Lots of animals in as natural habitat as possible. This little friend liked to have it's picture taken.

Sedgewick County Zoo is probably my favorite thing in Wichita. They just completed a North American prairie exhibit there. The jungle building is another favorite spot of mine at the zoo.
