Along the Flint Hills area, they burn the foliage to keep weeds down and grazing for cattle supple. Many complaints of this practice has been noted by big cities as far away as Kansas City (140 miles) because of the smog supposedly created. It is a tradition and necessity to keep doing this, however, and probably will not change. Fling Hills is about 30-40 miles of rolling hills and plains that is used for cattle grazing.
As it rains here again (and for the past 2 weeks) I must tell you to avoid certain roads here in Wichita.
1. West Street. If you want to get stalled, go for it :)
2. Seneca same as #1
3. Broadway & Pawnee. A floating we will go...
4. Sheridian & 2nd st
I am sure there are more streets that flood here and I will add them when I think of them...
If you are a coffee lover, heed this warning:
Do not be surprised if, after you ask a friendly Kansan for an espresso, they look at you and ask if that is some sort of perfume.
I'm sure not all Kansans are unaware of espressos & lattes & such, but we had quite a time tracking down someone that served the wonderful liquid. Once we found someone, it was OK at best- But maybe that's just because I'm from Seattle. :)
