I had a job one summer driving all over Wichita delivering muffins and cookies. Highways form a circle around and crosshairs across the city, allowing you to get just about anywhere in less than a half-hour. This is prairie land, allowing for straight street grids except for where highways or the river interrupts that grid. If I remember right, Douglas divides north and south street numbers, with each block starting a new 100 out from the center. Downtown is filled with one-way streets, but is small enough and the river is always near enough that it's easy to get back on track if you miss a turn. The airport's on the west side off US54, but good hotels seem to be evenly divided between that area and the booming, monied NE corner (the Tallgrass area) while most of the attractions, including the revived warehouse/entertainment district Old Town and the museums along the river, are concentrated downtown. All this means you must have a car to visit, but an abundance of reasonable parking and a good highway system makes getting around by car relatively easy. My friends and I found it fun to just stroll through, experimenting with all the fun scientific things. We went midday on a week day and had the place almost completely to ourselves. We have a good size zoo here. It will take a good 3 to 4 hours to visit the whole place. Of course if you dont feel like walking the zoo they do have a train that stops frequently throughout the zoo for you.
