In the center of Georgetown stands the picturesque Scott County Courthouse. It is the fourth to be constructed on this site and was built in 1877 in the second empire or "General Grant" style. The courthouse was designed by Pittsburgh architect Thomas Boyd and was most recently renovated in 1995.
The first Scott County Courthouse, built in 1792, was torn down to make room for a larger structure. On August 9, 1837, fire destroyed the second courthouse and most of the records were lost. The third courthouse, erected in 1847, was also destroyed by fire 1876.
In front of the courthouse are four interpretative markers which tell some of the history of Georgetown and Scott County, including notable people who have lived here.
As in most every American county seat town, the courthouse interior is open to the public. I often step inside to take a look around and use the restroom when doing a self-guided walking tour of county seats. My visit here was interesting, but brief, because I was en route home to see my beautiful wife.
