Rupp Arena has been a vital part of Lexington culture. Many things happen here. The UK Wildcats play here, the ice hockey team Thoroughbreds USED to play here, the Lipizzaner stallions make a stop here once a year as well as the circus, and we get dozens of big name concerts. In the attached Heritage Hall there is ALWAYS some kind of convention or sale or meeting or seminar. Very rarely is there nothing going on at Rupp Arena. I’m actually impressed by the musical acts that they get. In one month it seemed like we had Kid Rock, Norah Jones, and Big & Rich. Okay, so we didn’t really have them in one month, but they all did come in the same year. There’s a food court in the bottom level with regular fast food places, and the Hyatt Regency is attached if you’re looking for something a little more upscale restaurant-wise. The civic center shops are also part of the building and you can find some really neat Kentucky-inspired crafts and buys. (There’s also a good store that sells Waterford crystal items if you’re into that.)
The best concert I ever saw at Rupp Arena was the Down from the Mountain concert. They had their first show at Rupp and it was phenominal. I almost died of joy when I heard Emmylou Harris sing "Red Dirt Girl" live. http://www.lexingtoncenter.com/ 430 West Vine Street Lexington, KY 40507 (859) 233-4567 Leave a Comment

fountain in downtown by Krumlovgirl I MUST give a call out to my main man of mystery, Michael Thurman. If you’re into anything New Age, and you want to know something about your future, then you should definitely give this man a call. He does astrological charts and he’s so dead on that he’s downright frightening at times. It’s very in depth and lasts about an hour and half. At last call he was charging $80. This guy knows his stuff and is also well versed in various religions, philosophies, and astronomy. He has a degree in psychology, which is also helpful, and he’s helped me make some very wise decisions in the past. If you’re nervous about paying him a visit, don’t be. He’s very business-like and professional, although the office in his house is also very inviting and relaxed. One of my favorite things that he does is a world map based on your time of birth, place, date, etc. Even though he had never met me and knew nothing about me, when he showed me the map I was floored. All of my lines ran right through the Balkans and another line went through Wales-two places that have come to mean a lot to me.

Go for a drive. Lexington is surrounded by scenic by-ways... small rolling roads that pass by barns filled with drying tobacco, old stone fences, little babbling creeks, and lots of horses. Leave a Comment

by Bettybq There are several things a tourist should do when visiting Lexington. Drive. Go out away from the sub divisions. Take the little road that doesn't seem to have a name. The main things are easy to find but the small parks Like Raven Run (picture) have to be found.
I'm 65 and I have many fond memories but walking to school with my friends and saving my bus fair (5cents) for a do-nut at Spauldings bakery (Lexingtons best kept secret) to eat along the way is among the best. Leave a Comment

The ideal time to visit Lexington is a beautiful fall Saturday when you can attend racing at the fall meet at Keeneland and then attend a University of Kentucky night football game at Commonwealth stadium. This is also the time when restaurants and hotels are most likely to be full, so advance reservations are recommended. Spring is another excellent time to visit. In the winter season, Kentuckians will be found glued to their televisions or radio's watching the basketball wildcats, or commenting on the last game. Home games at Rupp arena are usually sold out, but tickets can usually be found, especially when Kentucky plays a game while the students are on Christmas break. Leave a Comment

by 1sassyfemme While on my way to see ekoostik hookah, I found that Lexington is a great mix of country and city life. When driving in to the city you see endless horse farms and land. Then once you get ino the city it all changes! As we drove closer to the the University of Kentucky (located in Lexington) more and more lights and people and places kept popping up. There was a mass of restaurants, bars, shops, and clubs. The streets were crowded with all sorts of people going from one place to another. I must say I was surprised. And the concert was great too! The University of Kentucky campus is a must see. Also had a tour of Rupp Arena which was amazing
The University life, and the prettiest girls I've ever seen. Had a basketball tournament there, that whole state is crazy for basketball. Leave a Comment

Go spend a day at Keeneland-quite possibly the most beautiful horse racing track anywhere. This place epitomizes class.
It sums up the culture of the area so well.
|
Go to a game at Rupp, or Midnight Madness. Absorb the whole UK basketball spirit as much as possible.
The whole UK college scene, and horse country.
