  • People don't visit Ramsey's for the decor. It is decorated with old mismatched tables and chairs and old photographs from Lexington.

What brings people back is the food is great at reasonable prices. You can pick a main dish and also choose from an abundant menu of freshly cooked vegetables. Also save room for a home made pie from Missy's (a pie shop owned by this chain).

Pork steak in red sauce or vegetable plate. Homestyle comfort food that will leave you satisfied.

  • Mi-Mexico, Rincon Mexicano, and Jalapenos
Believe it or not, Lexington has some of the BEST authentic Mexican food you will find north of the border. For many, many years now immigrants from all over Central America have been coming to central Kentucky to work in the tobacco fields as migrant workers. Over the years many of these workers have permanently moved to the region with their families. Some of these families have opened up restaurants featuring fare from their homelands. Mi-Mexico, Rincon Mexicano, and Jalapenos are all wonderful examples of restaurants that have started this way. Each offers very good food and drink. You cannot go wrong by dining at any one of these establishments.

    Fajitas!

  • I have many favorites. The best is the Atomic Cafe during the summer. Here you can get a cajun dish with a Reggae band playing in the background.

    Alfalfa's: Long time Vegetarian Favorite

  • I'm not a vegetarian, so I may not be the best person to give advice. However, this restaurant has been a favorite of UK students for 30 years. Kentucky Monthly magazine named it Kentucky's best vegetarian restaurant in 2003. I like it because of its homey atmosphere. The waitressess treat customers and each other like family.

See web link below (other) for reviews from other vegetarian diners. See Kentucky listings.

I've enjoyed the whole grain breads and buckweat pancakes.

  • Great Food, Low Prices, Nice environment! They have a large aquarium inside that is nice to look at and a huge fan in the middle that is very indian looking/vaulted ceilings. Spacious.

I really enjoy the Butter Crosiants and the Broccoli casserole. Iv tried many of their other dishes. They have a large variety.

Dave's Famous Ribs/ Tony Roma's: Several Barbecue choices

  • Lexington doesn't have an outstanding local barbeque restaurant, but several chains serve good barbeque.

The newest for Lexington is Famous Dave's Ribs located in front of the Lexington mall (New Circle at Richmond Rd), where several other resturants have failed. Famous Dave's has good ribs and side items. I hope it can remain in business despite the unlucky location. An old standby near Joseph Beth Booksellers is Tony Roma's. Excellent sauce selections.

Ribs. Its the only thing I've ordered from either restaurant.

Dudleys/ Merrick Inn/ Cheapside Bar and Grill: Several Choices for Good Patio outdoor dining
  • Satisfaction:

  • I've listed several local favorites for eating outdoors: Dudley's has a bricked in patio. This restaurant is located in an old school building built about 1884 on Maxwell street between Mill and Upper, near UK. Chefs usually have interesting selections.

The Merrick Inn located on Tates Creek Road (3380 Tates Creek Rd.) just off New Circle Road is in an old restored house in a complex of apartments. Casual, yet upscale food. (though some critics might find atmosphere stuffy). This is a favorite of racing fans that come to Lexington during Keeneland's spring and fall meets. Reservations highly recommended at that time.

The Cheapside Bar and Grill, located at 131 Cheapside next to the old court house on Main street is a good place to mingle with Lexington's young single professionals after work downtown and have a drink while listening to a local band.

These three restaurants have stayed in business for many years because they have consistently good food and service. If you like dining outdoors (in good weather), you can't go wrong with any of these. Dudelys and Merrick Inn are more upscale. Cheapside would appeal more to the single crowd.

Gumbo Ya-Ya: UK area cult favorite!

  • Many years ago when I went to UK, there was a restored train station called South Hill Station that housed all manner of restaurants and stores. One such restaurant was a yummy Cajun restaurant called Yat's. Well, unfortunately Joe moved out of town, closing Yat's and selling off his other restaurants, Jozo's (also Cajun restaurants). For years, I sadly contemplated never again having Maque Choux.

But then, one of the former employees tracked Joe down and must have begged permission to use his recipes. Because lo and behold, Yat's has been recreated again, now in TWO locations! The South Broadway location is so authentic to the original Yat's that customers were exclaiming in surprise while we were there during the first opening weeks. And for all of you that frequented Yat's regularly during your college days, I can assure you that the food is still excellent.

The Maque Choux sauce is exactly as I remembered it, although the peanut sauce was a bit spicier than I remembered. My husband's favorite, the Yat-wich, is still on the menu. And the new owner has added many more selections, all of which are listed on their website, www.gumboyayaky.com . The portions are huge, and the prices are reasonable: $5 for a small plate, $6 for a large plate. You go up to the counter and pick the sauce, and whether you want it over rice or pasta. And if you're new to the experience, or unsure, they'll let you taste-test a spoonful of as many sauces as you like so that you can try before you buy.

If you've saved room for dessert, don't forget to try a piece of the Elvis pie. It's worth all the extra calories! And get a couple pralines to go so you can savor the experience later. PS. If you show up on Mardi Gras, they usually give out free slices of King Cake and beads, of course.

The Maque Choux is my favorite, a little less spicy than some of their other sauces.
