    Kentucky Horse Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm with 1,200 acres surrounded by 30 miles of white fencing. It features two museums, twin theaters and nearly 50 different breeds of horses. You can see all sorts of horse-related activities, from horse shows and competitions to plowing. You can also take rides, including ponies for the little ones, and horse and buggy rides.

You really need to check out their website for an updated schedule because there is always something going on. During Christmas they have a whole Christmas light extravaganza that’s a pretty big deal around here. So big, in fact, that the local radio stations give out tickets as “prizes.”

    Ashland, home of Henry Clay
  • Tip Rating:
  • Henry and Lucretia Clay had a home at Ashland from around 1806 until 1852. At first it was their country home and then in 1809, they moved their growing family to Ashland where they lived until he died. At one time the estate covered up to 600 acres. Hemp, tobacco and grains were grown and livestock was raised. Henry was very interested in stock breeding and imported pure bred stock, particularly sheep and cattle, from all over the world. After Henry Clay's death in 1852, his heirs sold the estate to his son, James Brown Clay. Soon after James acquired Ashland, he had the original house, which had been in bad repair since the 1820s, torn down and a new one built. The second house was completed in 1857. It followed the plan of the first one and is documented to have been built on the original foundation or at least within the original builders trench. It is a registered National Historic Landmark.

With its tranquil setting and lovely stone fences and buildings, this national historic landmark is one of the most beautiful racetracks in the world. Live Thoroughbred racing takes place April and October. No racing on Mondays or Tuesdays. My ex boyfriend and I were here with about 300 others to pose as extras in the movie "Seabiscuit." They used Keeneland to act as one of the tracks in Maryland because since it hasn't changed much it looks historical.

    Mary Todd Lincoln House
  • Tip Rating:
  • This late-Georgian-style brick house is the site of the nation's first shrine to a First Lady. In 1977, the home was restored to reflect the Todd family's residency.

I went here on my first trip when I was in the 5th grade and I was very impressed. It's not a large house and impressive on that level, but they have managed to really recreate the era well. I have worked as a tour guide in several historical homes and tour places like that whenever I can so I find myself a little bit of a snob in that area. To this day I STILL enjoy the Mary Todd house.

On a side note, there is also a connection with Cassius Clay with the Todd-Lincoln house. If you have time check out White Hall in Richmond.
