Go see a horse race. Even people that don't enjoy wagering on horses usually enjoy Keeneland because it is a great place to take pictures and watch people. Keeneland has live racing in the Spring and Fall. The Spring meet is always in April just before the May meet of Churchhill Downs and the Kentucky Derby in Louisville--always the first Saturday in May. The Red Mile race track is famous in Harness Racing and hosts one of Harness Racing's Tripple Crown events. Watch for Keeneland in the new Sea Biscuit movie (carefully disguised to look like a 1930's track in the east). Sea Biscuit never raced in Kentucky.

I enjoy horses, especially race horses, and I really enjoyed this park! This is a working horse park but with exhibition of breeds, a hall of champions with the most valued horse in winnings in the U.S., and many attractions. Two great museums! We spent the day.

The park is open 7 days a week from March 15-October 31 and Wednesday thru Sunday, November 1-March 14. We are closed to the public on Mondays and Tuesdays from November 1-March14, and on Thanksgiving Eve and Day, Christmas Eve and Day, New Year's Eve and Day. Park hours are 9:00 AM through 5:00 PM.

Keeneland Racing in April and October
This is an absolute must-do activity for anyone and everyone wishing to visit Lexington. The races are run throughout the months of April and October and are a definite cultural experience. Churchill Downs is grand but it cannot compare to the beauty of Keeneland. It is reminiscent of the races at Ascot in England. Women adorn often large and noticeable hats, while men too are often dressed to the tee. But casual is the normal attire for a day at the races. Placing bets on the race is fun, but this is a place to see and be seen. Plan on spending a full day here. And don't forget to try the Kentucky bourbon bread pudding.

Horse Racing at Keeneland in March and October
Nothing else like it . . . if planned correctly, you can get into several rooms (club house atmosphere) and make it a really special event . . . beware, must plan well in advance

If you wanted to pick just ONE race track to visit, I might pick Keeneland! It is beautiful! And you are in the heart of KY horse country!

Keeneland is one of the few race tracks in the world where racing fans can get close to the horses.

Keeneland has live racing every April and October

Keeneland races Wednesdays through Sundays, with no racing on Mondays or Tuesdays

The tour continues through a description of each kind of horse and its development, use and popularity. There are displays of several tapestries: a small reproduction of the Bayeux tapestry found in Bayeux, France. There are 190 horses displayed on the embroidered tapestry. There is replica of Le Chevalier Tapestry which is on exhibit at Montacute House in Somerset, England. Another weaving shows Mohammad leaving Mecca. There are drawings by Leonard di Vinci of his beautiful horses and quite detailed stories about the importation of horses into Spain and the Western Hemisphere by the Spanish.

    ASHLAND
    by gkitzmil
If you like architecture, history, or both, visit the home of U.S. Statesman and Senator Henry Clay: Ashland. The mansion stands on the site of the original Ashland, home of Henry Clay from 1806 to 1852. It was rebuilt in 1857 due to crumbling brick, but is still now 250 years old.

The present Italianate style house was completed by Clay’s son James ( in 1857). The interior was remodeled in the Victorian style by Anne Clay McDowell, one of Clay’s granddaughters, in the 1880s.

About 90% of the items in the home have been owned and used by the Clay family.
