Lexington is a very nice town but like other big cities it has its trouble spots . the MAin one is Race Street and Arbor Grove Place , now while it is off the beaten path it isnt very hard to find yourself in this neightborrhood anyway its easy u can easily access it from winchester road coming into town just please dont at all not even in DAY Leave a Comment

There are some places in Lexington that are below the crime risk for an average American town and some places that are 1.7 times the average risk of being involved in a risky situation.
The best thing to do is to check with the hotel staff and ask if there are any places on your itinerary that you should avoid or times of day/night where your risks are much higher.
Be sure in any case to lock doors and keep valuables out of sight and locked away.
We traveled the typical tourist places in Lexington and had no problems but we did everything during the daylight hours. Use your head and common sense and stay safe on your vacation.

The main warning for Lexington would be avoiding Nicholasville road between UK and New Circle. During rush hour, they reassign the lanes as far as incoming and outgoing. There are indicator lights above each lane with either a red X, green arrow or yellow (circle?). Just avoid the red Xs. Also its real fun during a storm when all the signals go haywire.
Also as anoth person pointed how, do not immediately
go forward at a traffic light when it turns green. Lexington residents have a BAD habit of running them. I got to see a Jeep broadside a Toyota in front of me. Not pretty.
As far as crime, there are a few neighborhoods on the northside which one should not wander around on foot at night. Also when visiting the Daniel Boone National Forest etc, stay on the marked trails. Marijuana growers will have booby-trapped hidden fields in remote areas. They use Daniel Boone becuase of the Federal Seizure laws in place. Leave a Comment

The worst problem about Lexington is bad traffic on New Circle Road, Nicholasville Road, and Man 0' War Blvd during rush hour. Drivers tend to get impatient from getting stuck at red lights and some of them run the red lights, especially on Man 0' War, and Nicholasville. Several drivers are killed every year in accidents because of this type of driving, but it seems to be a problem that is only growing worse. Also watch out for the reversable lanes on Nicholasville Road heading into and near the University of Kentucky campus. Leave a Comment

The highest crime area is huge downtown around Upper Street, near the old Dunbar High School or the surrounding areas of Transylvania Univeristy. You can access these from Winchester Road. Also stay away from Georgetown Road via Newtown Pike. The area used to be a lot worse but they tore down the Charlotte Court projects and built some decent looking houses. Also keep out of Woodhill off of richmond road and centre parkway. They had to add a whole police division in the Centre Parkway area because it was too incovenient to drive all the way out there to respond to crime. Other than that, I hear from area cops that Lexington is a much more crime ridden place than what people think. People dismiss this stuff with all the night life, UK basketball and horse racing.
