Ear X-tacy is a Louisville tradition. They are huge supporters of independent music. They offer great in store performances, and have gained recognition and praise from many musicians (Toad the Wet Sprocket even used some Ear X-tacy memorabilia in one of their videos).
This past year, I got to see my favorite musician, Rhett Miller, play an instore performance before he went to open for Tori Amos at a local venue. It was wonderful! Thanks Ear X-tacy!
They have a huge selection - be it bluegrass, techno, rock, jazz, etc. They also have an impressive section dedicated to local music.
What to buy: Imports, local music cd's.
What to pay: $15 or so per CD

Its the only real affluent place you would really want to take your guest. It has Cameron Mitchell restaurants, but not many shops.
