Southwest airline flys into Louisville and the airport is about a 15 minute cab ride to downtown. A car is recommended, however there is bus transportation to most downtown locations. Also cariage rides in the evening and a city trolley that does site seeing.
Car is recommended, walking downtown, and bus to churchill downs, etc

  • If you need to call a cab, Yellow Cab is the biggest company in Lousiville. Call them at 502.636.5511.

Hey, if you've had too much to drink, you can call their Arrive Alive program. That number is 502.637.6511 ext 7351.

If you need an airport shuttle, call 502.315.8628.

For limo service, call 502.207.7412. You can get a shuttle-type van that is converted into a limo... kind of neat.

They also provide a wheelchair service. Call 502.634.4444

  • To get around the city cheaply, ride TARC, Transit Authority of River City. There is good service here, from downtown and the west end to Prospect and the east end. For more info on cheap transport in Louisville, visit:

  • Fly into Louisville 'International' Airport-Standiford Field (SDF) or if you have your own private jet, you can fly into Bowman Field. I'll try to get Classes and regulations for flying in.
SDF has car-rental facilities in the airport to make it easier for you. They also have hotel vans to pick you up if you need. There are taxis out front and also public buses in the city (TARC-Transit Authority of River City) that are fairly cheap.

    Louisville Regional Airport (SDF)

If you are heading to Louisville, your closest airport is Louisville Regional Airport (SDF) It is located about ten miles south of downtown, and about 5 miles from Churchill Downs. The Airport is also known as Standiford Field, named after the Dr. that owned most of the land that the airport sits on.

Louisville is serviced by most of the major air carriers, however in many cases it is that carrier's regional jet alternative.

    Carriers:
    American
    Continental
    Delta
    Express Jet
    Frontier
    Midwest
    NWA
    Southwest
    United
    US Airways

    Plane, train, bus, car.......

  • Plane, train, bus, car.... yeah, we're a decent-sized city... fly into our 'International' airport (international because the UPS Hub here has flights out of country). Amtrak now has a stop that connects only with Indianapolis. Greyhound goes everywhere. Car gets you here from Indianapolis and Nashville(I-65), St. Louis and Lexington, KY (I-64), Cincinnati (I-71).
again, big city.... taxis, buses, car (no trains or subways yet!).... hey, even carriage rides downtown at night. ;) Oh, but TARC (bus -- Transit Authority of River City) doesn't get you everywhere... especially out by me where there's a limited number of buses/times that one comes by. Also, biking can work depending on what part of the city you're in.

    Louisville,KY: Good transit system
  • Updated By midwesterner19 on August 26, 2004

  • Louisville has a very good transit system.
Cost: 75 cents: 10 tickets for 5 dollars
Routes: Louisville,KY has numberous routes (I would say close to 50) and the bus system is very efficent running from 5am to midnight on a majority of routes. Route 4 (University of Louisville) bus route runs from 4am until 2am (Beware: South 4th street is a little rough).
The bus drivers in Louisville are nicer than most, the buses themselves are cleaner than in most cities and the passengers tend to be kind of noisy as compared to most cities

  • We had a problem getting to the waterfront park area from the interstate because we missed our exit and drove halfway across Louisville to find a place to turn around. Then when we left we drove around a while looking for signs back to the interstate. there are a lot of one way streets and it seems we drove in circles to find an entrance ramp. We should have been better prepared and had a Louisville street map.
