A good set of road maps is a must. Rand Mcnally and American Maps make nice fold out paper maps with enough detail to get you into and through the major cities and wide enough scope to let you plan travel on the major interstates. We could not locate a good guide book so we picked up brochures at welcome stations and motels along the way to fill in the detail about sights to see.

Depends... summer is hot everywhere, and generally humid! Fall and spring are generally pleasant, but stormy in the spring. Now, winter... snow amounts vary across the state, as do temps. Louisville is generally milder than say the mountains in the east, where they are likely to get more snow and sometimes colder temps. Same thing with Lexington (not in mtns.)... sometimes they're cooler than us.

The weather in Kentucky can be unpredictable. Be flexible. Most larger towns will have everything you need. Walmart usually has good prices on film and supplies. Kentucky has great resort parks with cabins, motel rooms, and camp sites. Bring bug repellant and sunscreen during the summer and pack plenty of water. Kentucky can be humid in the summer. A panoramic disposable camera would be great for getting landscape pictures of the horse farms in central Kentucky.
