During the 1800's Avery Island was the last haven for these birds, which were prized for their showy feathers, by plume hunters. In 1892 E.A. McIlhrnny built a nesting area of bamboo out over a man made lake in hopes that they woul come there to mate. Now there are over 20,000 egrets and herons that nest there each summer.
