During the 1800's Avery Island was the last haven for these birds, which were prized for their showy feathers, by plume hunters.
In 1892 E.A. McIlhrnny built a nesting area of bamboo out over a man made lake in hopes that they woul come there to mate.
Now there are over 20,000 egrets and herons that nest there each summer.
They begin nesting in Feb. and March and their young remain there until winter arrives and they head farther south.
