My friend Steve's apartment - by invitation only

he cooks a mean gumbo, deer roast, and spagetti... that's what happens when you are Cajun and Italian!

The have a bar and dance floor with live music (wed and sat nights) in part of the restaurant. The dance floor can get crowded though! Not a franchise. I really like this place, and the prices are very reasonable.

Delicious seafood and Louisiana cooking! Honestly, almost everything here is good... hush puppies come with your meal.

Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro. (yep, the same Al Copeland who owns Copeland's. you can tell by the very tacky - i mean loud decor, but I like it still the same).
When I go, it is usually only for dessert, because it is so filling and good. The actual food is pretty good - the menu has a wide range of choices, but I prefer to eat at Copeland's if I am going to patron an Al Copeland owned location for real food (Copeland's is on Essen land, also a good place to eat but not an absolute favorite. If you want to go there, get the mile and a half high ice cream pie for dessert!)

The Cheesecake... they have a whole bunch of different varities and they are all very good!

Juban’s is easily the fanciest restaurant on my list, but isn't that expensive, especially if you don't drink wine with your dinner.

Juban's is a Creole Restaurant. I've only been a few times, so I don't have a favorite yet.

Nothing fancy, just great Louisiana food. Try the Fried Shrimp Po-Boy too.

Seafood Gumbo. Since I no longer live in Baton Rouge, I crave the great food often. So if Mom didn't make any Gumbo, I head a few blocks over to Phil's. Almost as good as Mom's.

  • Louie's is a diner just outside the LSU campus and is frequented by students and faculty. The atmosphere is extremely informal and fun, and the food is a rich but special :-) A lot of food at very very reasonable prices..

Their hashbrowns! Dont be surprised at the size of each portion!

Ryan's: If you've got a big appetite, this is YOUR place

  • Lots and Lots and Lots of FOOD! Be sure to come hungry...for a decent price you can leave with your belt loosened a few notches. You name it, they've got it....or so it seems. This is a large all-you-can-eat buffet setup and offers a huge variety of hot and cold foods, drinks, desserts, salads, soups, etc. One highlight: each table gets a basketful of freshly baked soft warm yeast rolls with a side of whipped honeybutter. Mmmmmmm!

The megabar that we enjoyed at Ryan's restaurant in Baton Rouge was incredible. I always heard the South knew how to cook, and once again this buffet was proof of that! This is a wonderful place to take children, too, because with all the variety they'll surely find something fit to eat, even with the fussiest of appetites! Then there's the dessert bar.......mmmmmmmmm
Probably most unique to the south, in my opinion, was the amount of fish and beans they served (not green beans per se, but black-eyed peas and other legumes, etc.) There were also a lot of summer squash and tomato dishes.....something I find particularly appealing but my companion did not LOL.

Again, as with JAlexanders, the ambience was cozy, warm, pleasant, romantic with soft lighting. One could dress casually or dress 'up' and still feel at home. The service was excellent and prompt. Everywhere I went here the people seemed to be happy with what they were doing.....a nice treat!

We started our meal with a 'Hurricane'---a cocktail known as a best seller in the restaurant that originated it: 'Pat O'Brien's' (see my New Orleans page). Let me tell you...it packs a punch lol. We followed that with a shrimp and crab gumbo soup which was spicey and delicious. We then ordered Grilled Red Snapper (am I right, Paul?) with your choice of sauces....mine was delicate, creamy and delightful. With that came warm, thick, flaky biscuits and red-skinned mashed potatoes and vegetables...all of this was out of this world...so nicely cooked and presented! It was one of the most enjoyable meals I had in Baton Rouge.
