  • I thought that the food was over priced and under impressive. The fish that I got had way too much butter on it. The pasta my wife got was bland. The restaurant seems to be a poor attempt by a chain restaurant to compete with the much better food that Louisiana offers. The food may would have been good if I lived in a place where no one knew how to cook.

    Good luck

    Juban's: Upscale in Baton Rouge

  • Juban's is an upscale Creole-based restaurant with all the courses available, each course with its own pricetag so you can try something from each, or pick what you like. The place seems to be a local favorite in the fine dining genre and although everything I ate was indeed quite good, I am not all that inclined to return, not for anything they did wrong, I just didn't think it was "all that".

The ambience, I thought was quite noisy for a restaurant of this caliber and the location is tucked back in a strip mall, not that there is anything wrong with that, but it took me a couple trips up the street to find it.

The prices reflect the upscale nature of the restaurant, not a problem for those wanting to experience fine dining, but probably a shock to the average Joe who might happen in. Without wine, it is easy to spend $50 - 60 per person, even if they do not opt for all the courses.

The Smoked Chicken, Duck and Andouille Gumbo appetizer was delicious.

The filet mignon was delicious also and as tender as warm butter, but was the smallest filet I have ever had.

The chocolate pate for dessert was quite good.

Others clearly enjoyed the venison/wild boar combo, the Dakota bison, the veal and the quail. There were several popular seafood dishes as well.

  • Great little Vietnamese restaurant located in a strip mall in the eastern suburbs. Inexpensive and tasty. I recommend the *bun* and the *pho* -- YUMMY!!!

Of course, other offerings are also very good, but if you're not familiar with this cuisine, these two types of dishes are the best to start with. Pho is the national dish of Vietnam -- it's a huge bowl of soup with various meats and/or seafood, noodles, basil or mint, and a big plate of sprouts, sliced hot peppers and lime wedges to accompany. Delicious, filling and cheap!

The restaurant is located in an Asian strip mall and is very clean and bright. They get a lot of Vietnamese customers, but there are also lots of Anglos customers also, so you shouldn't feel uncomfortable if you go there and you're not Vietnamese. The owners don't speak great English, but they can communicate the gist of what a dish is about.

I love the bun with grilled pork, grilled shrimp and Vietnamese eggroll. It's a cold noodle "salad" with the above mentioned meats along with chopped mint, some pickled turnip and carrot, chopped peanuts, chopped cucumber and I don't know what else... It comes with a small dish of "dressing" which is a slightly sweet, thin sauce that's based on the condiment, fish sauce. It is NOT fishy, though! It's wonderful!

This is a great summertime lunch or dinner -- very refreshing and not too filling, inspite of the large portion.

  • Mike Anderson's is a great place to get some seafood. Get some hushpuppies as an appetizer, and almost anything off the menu is delicious. This place can get crowded during the weekends for dinner and forget about it before an LSU game. The restaurant was opened by a former LSU football player and has various LSU memoribilia.

  • This has been a great place for a long time. The service is great and the food is better. Don't miss an order of onion rings. Make sure you get the coleslaw with the peanuts. Any fish dish is a can't miss. It gets very busy and the wait can be long. Go at non-traditional times and you shouldn't have a problem.

  • Mike Anderson was a football player for LSU who decided to try his luck in the resuaurant business. He hit upon some winning plays... for what it's worth, Mike Anderson's is my Mom's favorite seafood restaurant in Baton Rouge.

Mike's is on Lee Drive (street names change in Baton Rouge, so the street the restaurant is on is called College Drive, which turns into Lee drive, which turns into Brightside). The link I provided is for the Mike Anderson's that is inside of the Holiday Inn in Gonzales (20 miles down I-10), but the menu should be the same.

The Broiled Seafood platter... really it is the crabmeat au gratin, but I think there really is too much of a good thing... but the broiled seafood platter has a portion of the crabmeat au gratin and lots of other GREAT food!

  • The waiting line can be up to 45 minutes long on an ordinary weekend. If it's a LSU ballgame weekend, add more, but it's worth the wait. If you're wondering if it will fit into your diet, forget it. It's just a "see-food" diet.

It's got to be the "Guitreau". Grilled fresh fish fillet topped with sauteed crawfish, shrimp, mushrooms, and onions in white wine, butter and spices.

  • I have eaten here several times, both lunch and dinner and always enjoy it immensely.

There are various seating areas in this busy restaurant, including an outdoor area (weather permitting) some are quieter than others. The bar area is quite active around happy hour, also at lunch time.

The menu is wide and varied, and includes daily lunch specials which can be viewed on their website.

Come hungry, you won't leave that way!

Appetizers: Blackened Alligator, Fried Alligator, Hush Puppies, Boudin Balls

House salad with the "Tabasco Pepper Jelly Vinaigrette" dressing!!!

Entrees: 1/2 Crawfish Etouffée and 1/2 Fried Tails; Shrimp, Crawfish & Crabmeat Pasta; Black & Bleu Tuna; 14-oz Bone-In Pork Chop

Note, I do not usually order a 'pork chop' in a restaurant but this one was highly recommended. I see why... it was a big, thick, juicy pork chop, perhaps the best I have ever had.
