Po-Boy Express: Love That Shrimp Po-Boy

  • There are 3 Po-Boy Express locations in Baton Rouge. The one we went to for lunch on a business trip was off Airline Hwy. There are probably about 15 tables and it is like sitting in your kitchen. Being from Chicago we really don't get genuine po-boys even at our New Orleans style restaurants. The restaurant serves a variety of po-boys, hamburgers and the south's mafalatta sandwich.

I always enjoy a good Shrimp Po-Boy sandwich. The New Orleans/Baton Rouge area is great for fresh shrimp (at least I hope it's still from the area). The sandwich along with fries will definately last you until supper.

  • The food here is great. The menu is a little limited, but it is all good. It is Italian with a mix of cajun.

The pork chops are the best I have ever had. The lasagna is loaded with cheese. The potatoes au gratin are wonderful and creamy. Crawfish and corn bisque is great.

  • Silver Moon's is my favorite restaurant in Baton Rouge. It's on Chimes Street close to campus. The food is so good, I get hungry just writing about it. Try the smothered chicken with white beans and rice. Come hungry, because the meals are quite large. The tea is also very good. The place might not look that nice, but the food is amazing.

Silver Moon Cafe: Mind your Manners!

  • All these years that I have been in Houston, I have been telling people of my days being fed by Mama at the Silver Moon Cafe. Its this little house just off the LSU campus.. you pay a fixed price and you get what Mama cooked that day.. and lots and lots of it.

It gets very crowded, but everyone is so nice.. share a table.. and be courteous to everyone. I've never seen it happen, but I come from a generation of little girls that have seen Mama's slap the manners back into someone.

I haven't eaten here in about 4 years. When I sat down to a bowl of red beans and rice.. I admit..i cried a little.

red beans and rice.. such a simple dish... but if its done right it takes hours and hours..

*sigh* its only a 5 hour drive to baton rouge from houston.. i can get there in plenty of time for lunch!

Thai Pepper: Let's hit that lunch buffet

  • I started a job in the Bon Carre Business Center so I had to start finding places off of Florida to eat, and I am now totally in love with the Thai Pepper. Not fancy at all, but the perfect place to load up on some vegi fried rice, carrots in yellow curry, fried sweet potatoes and chicken in a peanut sauce. What diet?

    Load up on the Buffet.

  • This place has the best steaks in the area. The restaurant is located on hwy 51 adjacent to the railroad tracks in Independance, La. Independance is a VERY small town so the restaurant is easy to find. The place doesn't look like much from the street but the inside of the building is nice. The atmosphere is casual. Reseravations are not required but will help on friday and saturday nights.

  • This restaurant was formally a bar and was converted into a restaurant about 2 years ago. It is located right on the Amite river diversion canal.

The seafood is great. Nothing is overly greasy and most items are homemade. Portions are adequate.

    Tony’s seafood: Like catfish?

  • This place is neat. Their slogan is ”fried on this end, swimming on the other end” That’s because they have live catfish wells in the back. The place is a seafood distributor and home of Louisiana Brand products that also keeps a line of hot food.

Off the beaten path. It is open late, but there is nowhere to sit and eat. I suggest to pick up a plate and drive to Southern University’s campus to enjoy at one of the best views of the Mississippi River!

Their specialty is the fried catfish.
