    Tchefuncte River

by msbrandysue Updated Dec 23, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: While at the Trailhead I noticed a nice area where the Tchefuncte River ran through the area. The Covingtonians love their river heritage and the monument shows their appreciation. The 48-mile river runs into the Pontchartrain and was used to sustain the community in earlier times.

The Tchefuncte has been designated by the government of Louisiana as a "Natural and Scenic River."

As for the Bogue Falaya, it's a 23-mile river, known as a tributary (smaller river that flows into a bigger) that meets with the Tchefuncte River in Covington. It's interesting to me because I have just a bit of Choctaw heritage and the the name of Bogue Falaya is derived from the Choctaw words bogu, “river,” and falaya, "long." The portion that meets with the Tchefuncte is also known as a "Natural and Scenic River."

Fondest memory: Check out Wikipedia's Tchefuncte entry or Wikipedia's Bogue Falaya entry for more information.

Favorite thing: A small old town of former English rather than the French style of New Orleans. A great place to meet friends for food and shopping. Visit the old shops, feed stores and art galleries.
