Heiner Brau: Downtown Microbrewery and Museum

While I was roaming around downtown Covington I found the Heiner Brau brewery. Since it was a Wednesday it was not open. However, the brewery is open for tours on Saturdays.

"The 30 minute tours begin at 10:00, 10:45 and 11:30 AM. The tours include a guided walk through the brewery and presentations on beer types, the art and science of brewing, packaging and distribution of beer" (website below).

    Visitors Center at Trailhead

While at the Trailhead I went inside the Visitors Center....and found absolutely nothing. There was no one there and no brochures. However, there was a train set there and I figured it was the town during the industrial era. The good thing was there were bathrooms around.

The only thing I can say is...I believe that the Trailhead was new and recently built and opened. Therefore, maybe there will be some improvements in the area. Also, there are St. Tammany Parish visitor centers for the whole area off the highway if you're looking for brochures.

Just wanted to let yall know.

    Covington's Farmers Market

I attended the Wednesday market which had lots of prepared foods and desserts made by local citizens. They also have live music playing at both that kind of adds to the experience. Many of the local business people come over and have lunch here. There are tables set out for you to purchase and enjoy your meals.

Saturday market is much bigger and has more traditional items like veggies, fruits, plants, and local crafts. I would definitely check this one out if you're in the town Saturday mornings. Looks great.

From the website I learned that you can even take your pets. :)

Definitely check out the website! It's very cute and has the vendors/schedule for each market.

    Saturday Market 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
    Covington City Hall
    609 North Columbia Street

    Wednesday Market 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
    The Covington Trailhead

    Covington Trailhead

The Trailheads are sort of like the town centers that are along the Tammany Trace linking a lot of the cities together. At each of the Trailheads you will find many things to do. At the Covington Trailhead I found a beautiful area that would be great to sit out and people watch on a nice day.

When you walk up on it you'll immediately see the statue of Ronald Reagan (largest statue of RR see...Off Beaten Path tip).

"Covington's recently dedicated trailhead resembles an old-fashioned railroad station and includes a covered waiting platform, a clock tower, a bandstand, a sloped, grassy, shaded audience area, rest rooms, water fountains, visitor center, exhibit hall and small movie theater. On Wednesday's, the Covington Farmers Market offers fresh produce, light lunches, and live music. Stroll around town and visit its unique boutiques, restaurants and art galleries."

I definitely recommend stopping by the Farmers Market and picking up some lunch choices. There was also a live band playing guitars.

Biking, Jogging, or Walking the Tammany Trace

by msbrandysue Written Dec 6, 2009

St. Tammany Parish is sort of like Harris County in Houston. It houses many different smaller cities. At least that's what I'm equating it with. In support of the beautiful landscape the parrish built 31 miles of connecting pavement for those to enjoy the tall pine trees and weather the area allows.

The Trace connects Covington, Mandeville, Abita Springs and Slidell. At each of the cities there is a Trailhead with places to use the restroom and facilities. There are also other attractions. I listed more pictures and information in my Things To Do Tips for each city.

The parrish and cities keep these trails upkept and beautiful. I have the 31-mile path on my list of things to do. But I was somewhat injured when I visited.

I also learned in Mandeville you can rent bikes to do the biking. I did not see them at Covington, Slidell or Abita Springs, though.

    Downtown Covington

Visiting downtown Covington is definitely a fun way to see the city. There are a lot of old buildings that have been turned into small shops and galleries. Unfortunately, they close around 5pm-6pm so I didn't to visit too many. But it's fun to walk around.

Check out the website listed! I loved using the guide to find different places to see and eat. They also have many different areas of St Tammany's to visit that are close to Covington.
