Donaldsonville is a town with a fairly steady population of about 7500 located along Louisiana Highways 1 and 38 in Southeast Louisiana. It is on the highway where that runs along the river and provides access to many of the old plantations. Donaldsonville was the state capitol in 1830. Settlement of the town began in 1765 with the arrival of Acadian settlers. Today, Donaldsonville is the parish seat of Ascension Parish. Donaldsonville has a number of buildings/sites on the National Register of Historic Places. The Ascension Parish Courthouse is part of the Donaldsonville Historic District.
