    The Tammany Trace

I never know who looks at the different areas of travel so I thought I would also include this in my Things To Do.

The Tammany Trace is a 31-mile trail connecting the four cities of Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville and Slidell. Most people bike the trail but it's also available to walk or jog. You can start and stop wherever you wish.

In Mandeville there are bike rentals if you aren't close by or if you didn't bring your bike.

I highly suggest bringing plenty of water especially in the South since it's SO hot and humid here!

    Beautiful Houses near Lake Pontchartrain

by msbrandysue Written Nov 21, 2009

I would highly suggest driving around the small roads around the Lake Pontchartrain. The designs are beautiful and many of the houses are very well kept. I had a lot of fun driving around and looking at them. Very neat!

I would have taken more pictures but some of the neighbors were out and looking at me funny! I didn't want to disturb anyone and since I was alone I didn't feel very safe doing so.

    Visit Lake Pontchartrain

I found my trip to Lake Pontchartrain a highlight of Mandeville. I went during a weekday and everything seemed to calm and peaceful. There are plenty of biking and jogging trails around the lake. There were kid playgrounds and plenty of grass for picnics or fun games like football or soccer. There was even a group of women doing yoga in one of the gazebos. Very enjoyable experience!

    Mandeville Trailhead

I read about the Tammany Trace and wanted to visit the three Trailheads. I wasn't quite expecting how nice they were. The Trailhead in Mandeville had restrooms and vending machines, an ampitheater for live entertainment and a water park for kids. When I saw park I do not mean something huge. There were streams of water shooting out of the ground and the kids were running around in their bathing suits.

Walking around the pavilion area I was able to read the plaques explaining the history of the town of Mandeville and it was very nice. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Mandeville.

Check website for listings of the events happening at the Trailhead, like the farmers market!

by dmdupre Written Oct 24, 2007

The pier at Sunset point (access from monroe st in old mandeville) has been rebuilt since Katrina. If i am not mistaken, it is open 24 hrs a day. lighted at night. last time i was there we caught crab, redfish, catfish, and a stingray. this is a very large pier. not sure of what licensing is needed.

The longest bridge in the world!

    by Annette98 Written May 22, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

For a small bit of adventure, you can take a drive to New Orleans on the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway. Fortunately, this bridge did not sustain severe damage during Hurricane Katrina. Still, some people find it a bit unnerving when you reach the middle of the bridge and cannot see land in any direction (unless it is a very clear day).

The bridge costs $3 on the Mandeville side and is free to return.

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana is the listed in Guinness Book of World Records as the longest bridge at 23 miles 1538 yards.

    Tammany Trace

    by Annette98 Written May 22, 2006

The Tammany Trace is a rails to trails project which has opened up a path for skatin, biking or walking from Covington to Slidell. Although parts of the Trace are still damaged from Hurricane Katrina, the Trace is open now and ready for use. A relaxing trip along the Trace takes you through beautiful scenery and is great exercise.

In Mandeville, the Trace goes through Old Mandeville with many restaurant and antique stores.

Traverse the world's longest bridge. The Causeway bridge is 24 miles long and connects Mandeville (on the north shore) to New Orleans (on the south shore). Be careful to observe the posted speed limits as the bridge is heavily patrolled by policeman...not that I've ever been pulled over by one of them!

Lake Pontchartrain is one of the largest lakes in the United States trailing only the Great Lakes and the Salt Lake in size. The lake is great for all types of boating especially sailing.

Many of the homes along Lake Pontchartrain are elevated to protect against flooding. Only the garage of this house is at ground level.
