  • Surprisingly, during holidays, the old town of Natchitoches has restaurants that are closed. So, we found ourselves cruising the main streets of the new town looking for something that wasn't fast food. At one point, we even go desperate and checked the menu of the Popeye's thinking maybe the advertisement for crawdads could be true. Eventually, we chose the Chuckwagon Cafe, a place decked out to please a cowboy. I ordered a chocolate shake and hush puppys for starters. I had a steak with mashed potatoes and my wife had fried shrimp. The tab came to $30- including tax and but not including tip. Service was good. It's a good place to take the kids.

    Nothing was fantastic here, but at least we avoid the worst of the chain restaurants. I believe that Chuckwagon does have several locations. This was a sit down restaurant with good service that's easy to find in town.

  • Directions: Cross the bridge from old to new Natchitoches and then at the first major boulevard light, turn right. There are all sorts of fast food restaurants on either side, but Chuck Wagon is on the left. Parking is easy.

    During our annual trip to visit Sarah's family in Louisiana, we decided to stop and have Christmas Eve dinner in old town Natchitoches. The traditional place to have this dinner is The Landing, which is a beautiful little brick restaurant right over looking the river. I tried the famous Natchitoches Meat Pies, which were delicious, and Sarah had a bowl of gumbo. I took a sip, and boy was it flavored nicely!

    Lasyone Meat Pie Kitchen is famous for its meat pies, red beans, rice & sausage not to mention Cane River Cream Pie. For over a quarter of a century it has been a stopping off place for locals and travellers.

    The ‘dirty rice’ and squash casserole is good not to mention the meat pie of course. They have a salad bar for repeat refills or just a ‘one trip’ salad for $2.95. The corn fritters weren’t quite what I was used to or expecting – more like a rolled deep fried corn bread ball. The menu has other 'specials for the day.' Open Monday through Saturday, 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.

    The Landing Restaurant sits right in the historic district overlooking the Cane River Lake. The downstairs dining room is decorated in a New Orleans garden style with street lamps and wrought iron along with a 30ft oak bar. They serve fresh fish, shrimp, oysters, crawfish, pasta, USDA steaks, and chicken amongst other wonderful dishes.

  • In 1999 my sister-in-law got married. They had the reception held at The Landing Restautant on front street. It was nice and cozy. The atmoshphere is unlike anywhere else. It is extremely pedestrian friendly, a hometown feel.

    Famous Meat Pies, Natchitoches tradition. A friendly, casual establishment, specializing in the Meat Pie Lunch and dirty rice. They've been featured in such publications as The New Yorker, Gourmet Magazine, Southern Living and Good Roadfood as well as many others.

    Meat Pie, of course, with red bean sauce. Cannot miss the dirty rice, IT WAS SO... GOOD!!! Cane River Cream Pie is good too!

  • The food is mostly Southern Style Cooking. almost Home over looks Sibley Lake off the North bypass. The reason is so good is that the food is the old southern rib stickin kind. Very relaxed, family atmosphere. The owners are thier everyday. She's in the Kitchen Cookin and Bill is working the counter. It really almost like eating at my grandparents house.

    they feature a one trip buffet. That may sound worthless to some, but trust me you wont need to go back for seconds. I prefer the fried pork chops. They are HUGE! They also have a homemade dinner that is massive and delicious. Oh, and don't forget the sweet tea! When you go, tell Bill at the counter the red headed Army guy from Indian said hi! Oh, the last time I went it cost 6 bucks a plate.

    Hmm.... loot at the meat pie, red bean sauce and my favourite DIRTY RICE!!! The taste still on my head whenever I look at this picture... SO GOOD!!! They stuffed 80% ground beef + 20% ground pork into a hand made pastry, season with special cajun spice, then deep fry until golden brown color. I wish I could know the receipe of the dirty rice, but too bad, no other restaurant at home offer this dish here... The only thing I can do is to look at this picture again, and dream about it! lol Anyway, if you really into meat pie, they have meat pie festival every year September, when you can eat as much we you can!!!

    This is the famous "Cane River Cream Pie". It don't look good, not attractive appearance, but I tell you, I just could not stop finishing the whole piece after I started one bite! Even though I was already stuffed with salad, dirty rice, & meat pie. This cream pie actually was "born" in an accident, from a failed over-cook cake. And it now become one of the famous dish in the restaurant.

    This place is interesting... it's more like a community center than a pub. People just walked in & out, and chat with each others. Some buy drinks & food, some simply walk in to chat, without ordering anything. They seem to know everybody in the pub, except us, a group of new faces out of town!!! The food was OK, nothing fantastic but OK, Po-Boys, Catfish, etc. However, the starter "Fried Shrimp in Spicy Cajun Style" was VERY GOOD!!! I couldn't stop eating it!!!
