    Natchitoches bookstore was closed during our visit, so I was worried that I might not be able to shop for good documented history books, a passion wherever I travel. Luckily, the Oakland Plantation Giftshop, managed by the National Parks Service, has a good supply of books, music CDs, and even souvenirs. Sometime prior to 1994 National Park creation, the old store apparently had served the locals gas and groceries from the roadside entrance.

    There's a number of wonder coffee table photo books, as well as books devoted to the history of the indians, creoles, and African-American slavery in the area. I bought books for each topic and a couple of CDs that had traditional zydeco and local Louisiana music.

    Nothing was overpriced here, but I easily spent $150- on books and CDs.
