The Cherokee Plantation is still occupied and not yet part of the new plantation national park, but a stop by is worth the photo through the gates. The name is relatively new and refers to the Cherokee roses on the property. Occasionally it's open for tours apparently. It's one of the first plantations found along the Cane River scene route south of Natchitoches.

We stopped at a grocery and heard the thick Creole accents of the Natchitoches area. I could hardly understand what was said. Then, I noticed the interesting combination of things advertised for sale on the old store front.

  • Address: Natchitoches, near the fort, and elsewhere in area
  • Directions: Drive the Cane river plantation route and you'll find plenty of these run-down looking small businesses, which are worth looking into for an unusual snack and an excuse to converse with the locals.

It was started in late 1700's by land grant to son of Marie Terese, the mother of 14 children and slave to St. Denis, a land barron in his time. They were sold to a guy named Metoyer and he may be the father of all? He freed them and as a result the blacks got land.
In 1898, Miss Cammie Henry-a bit wacky-bought the plantation and eventually converted it into an artist hippy type house of its time. Her art work is famous, but to me needs a lot more work and generally cannot put together smooth strokes.
It is now privately owned and used for tours only.

    Old Courthouse State Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Natchitoches Parish Old Courthouse sits in the heart of the historic district. It has a large collection of artefacts from the Natchitoches and Cane River area. The courthouse was originally built in 1886 and opened as a Museum in July, 1996. It is right next door to Lasyone's.

    Cane River
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cane River Lake is a beautiful, meandering body of water flowing through downtown Natchitoches and on the Plantation Country. Originally called the La Rivierre du Cannes, the river runs through a narrow valley, 35 miles long and six miles wide, from Natchitoches to Cloutierville and once supported one of the most sophisticated societies in the French colonies.

The only pure trace of that unique society left today is the French Creole style of architecture found in the region's plantation houses and their out buildings. There are remembrances of the past on this long and narrow lake.

    Quaint Little Stores
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are some wonderful little shops along Front Street. Gift shops and craft stores along with a lovely book shop which has some great books on the area - say hello to the two fury residents while you are there. The bricks laid in Front Street were laid in 1910/11 and the local hardware store, Kaffie-Frederick Hardware, has been in operation since 1863.

    Louis Juchereau de St Denis
  • Tip Rating:
  • Natchitoches was established in 1714 by Canadian Louis Juchereau de St. Denis where it became the westernmost French post in Louisiana. Its influence prevented further eastward expansion of the Spanish.

    Roselawn House
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rose Lawn House was built in 1903. It’s a delightful Queen Anne home built by the Williams family with the third generation presently occupying the residence. It is a real example of elegance and style set in manicured gardens.
