Dick and Jenny's: Three cheers for friends!
It's axiomatic that if you're going to New Orleans, you're going to be having some fabulous meals. The city is full of great restaurants. But we kept hearing about Dick and Jenny's -- and when people heard we were going, they were envious, so I knew we were onto something good. The little frame house is unprepossessing outside, but come in, anyway.
D&J got walloped by Katrina, but decided to rebuild. Lots of neighbors and friends pitched in, and whenever someone helped, the owners gave them a plate and asked them to decorate it. The decor in the large dining room next to the bar is composed almost exclusively of these rows and rows of plates, a testimonial to the love and respect in which this little restaurant is held.
We had a group composed of those who had managed to survive an astonishingly bad speech from an individual who shall not be named, so alcohol was definitely needed to restore convivial spirits. D&J turned out to have an impressive menu of designer drinks, some of which ultimately found their way to our table. Then we had a feast, starting with a marvelous avocado-and-cilantro cold soup and moving right along...you can see my shrimp with goat cheese grits in the photograph, but many other entrees were sampled by the rest of the party and plates were clean and smiles were present when it was all over. The only thing that didn't go over so well was a basil Thai-influenced creme brulee. The bon temps should roulez in that direction...
