by Virtuous_Tourist Softly lit and not terribly fancy, Venezia is New Orleans’ Italian restaurant emeritus. It’s been there forever, and the food is consistently great. White tablecloths share space with plain vinyl chairs, decades old wall hangings set the stage.
Standard but appealing Italian fare: lasagna, stuffed shells, and spaghetti in five different preparations. Their pizza is quite good. House specialties include 'Eggplant Vatican' (fried eggplant with shrimp, crawfish and crabmeat touched with cream sauce). 'Veal Supreme' arrives breaded accompanied by shrimp, crawfish and artichoke hearts. And if thin crust pizza with spicy sauce, topped with lots of cheese and meat calls your name, this is your place. Venzia's cheesy garlic bread is addictive, their meatballs are better than mama made and service is strictly a throwback to when personable waiters were a key part of the restaurant experience. If you feel like venturing outside of the tourist district and having some hearty Italian food, take a ride out to Venezia. Venezia has been serving home-cooked meals in this location since 1957, and their sign still says "Pizza Pie"! The food is good, the atmosphere is welcoming, and it's a great place for families. (And, psssst: their website offers a printable 10% discount coupon for your first visit.) If you still have room for dessert, waddle down the block for a gelato at Angelo Brocato's (tip follows). Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
