We walked around this building from the Riverside Streetcar to get to Jackson Square and the French Market. This picture is from the Mississippi. It looks like an amazing building, but we did not shop there.

The Jax Brewery Shops is in the building which once housed the Jax Brewery. It is a small shopping center containing a few tourist stores that sell film and water, etc. and also a few clothing and jewely stores mostly geared toward tourists. The reasons why I like the Jax Brewery are 1. Because of their second floor food court which overlooks the Mississippi: You can get an inexpensive lunch here and escape the New Orleans sun for a bit in their cool air conditioning. The food court even has a bar where you can sip drinks and look out at the river. 2. Because there is a public restroom here on the first floor which is good to know about if you've been walking around all afternoon drinking hurricanes!
Fifty years ago, New Orleans was proclaimed the "brewing capital of the South." And before Prohibition, there were about a dozen breweries, the choices were intoxicating. The Jackson Brewery (purportedly named after Andrew Jackson) employed 500 workers and produced between 350 - 450 thousand barrels per year as the largest independent brewery in the South. It went out of business in the late 1970's.
The Jax Brewery building became home to approximately 60 high-end shops and eateries when it reopened as a French Quarter mall in 1984. Part of the mall is the "Louisiana's Living Treasures", on the third floor, it replicates a typical Cajun village with displays and demonstrations. Also inhabiting the third floor is the Jax Collection. It is a museum of the history of the Jackson Brewery.
When we were there...There was a wedding party heading up to the 3rd floor.
Mon - Sat 9am - 8pm
Sun 10am - 7pm
What to buy:
French Quarter Candy Market -- We got some magnets and a couple of gift baskets with alligator eggs (gum).
Pat O's on the River, Café and Grande Terrace -- we had a great view of the Mississippi River.
JAX Daiquiri Cafe -- I had the pina colada, it was good!
Turquoise Gallery -- Native American-made jewelry and pottery.
Bayou Country General Store -- classic kitchy souvenir stuff.
This mall (locals just call it "the Jax") is filled with souvenir shops as well as a few restaurants. You'll find Pat O'Brien's other location upstairs, a Virgin Record Shop where I escaped an afternoon rainstorm and spent over an hour browsing and listening to jazz. There is also a tourist information booth inside.
Actually, I can't remember the name of this store, but it's located on the top floor of the Jackson Brewery Shopping Center and it specializes in all things New Orleans. This is a photo of an amazing selection of hot sauces!
