If you haven't been to Cafe Du Monde, you haven't been to New Orleans!! Cafe Du Monde has been serving the best cafe au lait in the country since 1862!! A trip to New Orleans without stopping in Cafe Du Monde would be unthinkable. The cafe is perfect place to stop off for great cafe au lait at any time and a plate of powdered-sugar topped beignets or puffy French doughnuts for dessert. This combo isn't bad for a quick breakfast either, and judging by the lines of people there in the morning, a lot of people from New Orleans think the same thing! I think the secret to the superb cafe au lait is the restaurant's own blend of coffee and chicory, mixed half and half with hot milk. Chichory is made from the root of the endive plant which is then roasted and ground. Coffee with chicory seems to be mostly a Southern tradition and I remember my mother brewing coffee with it. You can't miss the green, stripped awning stretching over the large, outdoor table area. It's a great vantage point for some people watching too! A smaller, but quaint indoor seating area is where we always sit because we like to watch all the hub-bub inside and throng of people outside from the little bistro tables next to French doors! Cafe Du Monde seems to have an ambience all its own. We always leave with at least a little or alot of powdered sugar on us--a definite clue as to where we've just been. A plate of 3 beignets is $1.59 and cafe au lait in round, ceramic cups is a little less. This is quite an inexpensive way to sample a uniquely New Orleans treat!! There is also a Cafe du Monde with counter service in the Riverwalk Mall. You can purchase a nice selection of their coffee or beignet mix, mugs, T-shirts, caps, etc. at the Jackson Square location, or you can order online or by phone. If you're interested in American history, specifically World War II history, the D-Day Museum should be one of your first stops in New Orleans. This popular museum showcases a vast array of exhibits, documents, artifacts, photographs, and movies. Perhaps the most moving parts of the state-of-the-art exhibit exhibits are the oral histories from veterans worldwide. The National D-Day Museum Foundation was founded in 1991 by noted historian and author, Dr. Stephen Ambrose from the University of New Orleans. Ambrose wrote the book, "D-Day" and many others as well as consulted on TV documentaries and films. The Museum opened it's doors on June 6, 2000 with the enormously talented director Steven Spielberg and Oscar-winning actor and star of "Saving Private Ryan" attending. This museum address all the amphibious invasions or D-Days of WWII and is a tribute to the more than 1 million Americans who took part. It's New Orleans location is due not only to Dr. Ambrose's presence here but also because it was in New Orleans where the Higgins Boat, the landing craft used during the D-Day invasion, was manufactured. President Eisenhower credited the Higgins Boat with being responsible for the great success of the Allies. Additions to the museum have taken place since its opening, but unfortunately during the hurricane disaster of August, 2005, the museum was vandalized and damaged. Let's hope that this fantastic museum is back on its feet again. Leave a Comment Address: 945 Magazine Street, New OrleansPhone: 504-527-6012Directions: Warehouse District. Perhaps the most recognized landmark in New Orleans, St. Louis Cathedral is the centerpiece of Jackson Square. This cathedral is unique as a focal point of an ultra-Catholic city, as its interior is somewhat sparsely decorated. But in spite of that, it does have a great deal of historical significance: Andrew Jackson supposedly laid down his sword on the altar in thanks for his victory in the battle of New Orleans. It is also the oldest continually operating cathedral in the US. Pope John Paul II also has made a visit here. The cathedral is open to visitors. The French Market is an open-air market full of fresh produce and local foods as well as a flea market. It features items that can be found in many tourist shops for a fraction of the cost. Good deals can be found on jewelry, t-shirts, bags, and books among other things. A fun place to look around. Leave a Comment Address: Decatur St.Directions: Decatur St., far end by Margaritaville

Long known for its bawdy, often raw, nightlife, Bourbon Street is chock full of music, jazz clubs, restaurants, shops and that great New Orleans architecture. We took a short stroll down Bourbon Street while some friendly people we met held our place in the line waiting for the Preservation Hall performance. (Now that's friendliness for you!) For adults, this is an eye-opener, but it's not advisable for the little ones. The Embers " Original" Bourbon House Restaurant is one famous resident of Bourbon Street significant for its architecture, great food and its many famous guests, including Tennessee Williams who dined there often. During Mardi Gras you can bet this place will be packed and probably gets down right rowdy or even worse. The evening we were there, the street was very crowded and all the jazz clubs seemed to be hopping! Leave a Comment Directions: Bourbon Street is located in the French Quarter of "Vieux Carre."

Jackson Square is located in the heart of the French Quarter or Vieux Carre (Old Square) in New Orleans. St. Louis Cathedral (completed in 1794) is the imposing center of Jackson Square. The Jackson Square area was generally called the Place d'Armes by the French and Plaza de Armas by the Spanish. This was the area where the militia drilled and the citizens met. The Place d'Armes was the site of the Louisiana Purchase (1803) ceremony, and was subsequently renamed Jackson Square in the 1850's in honor of Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812 and later President of the United States. Today Jackson Square is a beautiful landscaped park at the center of which you will find a statue of Andrew Jackson. The park is landscaped in a sun pattern, with walkways set like the sun's rays streaming out from the center. It is a visual feast along the walls of this park, and on any given day you will find people displaying their arts & crafts, young musicians, face painters, carriages for hire and any number of others who make a living from the parade of tourists in this area. It's teaming with a variety of life and a great place to do some serious people watching and listening to music! About 90 minutes west of New Orleans along the Cajun Coast is the community of Houma. We were in transit between New Orleans and Morgan City, so check not only my images and tips here, but check out my pages for Morgan City. Munson Tours are a one boat operation at the reasonable price of $20 per adult, and the tour guides are authenticly Cajun raised in the bayou. The disadvantage of taking a tour in the Cajun gulf coast is that the forests are second growth and the tree trunks are relatively small in diameter. However, the tour operations in this area do provide gator and wildlife appreciation which deserves support among those ecologically minded. So, it was that we joined a family on a boat tour (not the ecology compromising fan boat) of a bayou. In winter time, the trees are more often bare and the gators are hiberating, but we saw plenty of wildlife and the unique beauty of the swamp. So, for example, when I talk about the area being second growth, I have to remember that in the delta region of California, there is not even second growth standing. It's all farmland, pastureland, freeways, and houses. It's a good day get away from the urban chaos of New Orleans. Leave a Comment Address: 979 Bull Run Road, Schriever, La. 70395Phone: (985) 851-3569Directions: Call for specific directions, but basically, go west on I-90 from New Orleans. You'll cross the Mississippi, and see some beautiful country right off the causeway going there. Again, check out Morgan City as a place to visit in the area.Website: http://www.munsonswamptours.com/ Other Contact: fax (985) 448-2977

Jackson Sq. is the home of St. Louis Cathedral and the Cabildo and Presbytere, the buildings on either side of it which are both historical museums. The Square is flanked with shops and restaurants and centered by a large park featuring a huge statue of Andrew Jackson, hero of the battle of New Orleans. The park is closed after dark. The Square is also full of street vendors offering everything from portraits to fortunes. Leave a Comment Address: Decatur St.Directions: Decatur St.

The French Quarter is the original part of the city of New Orleans. Its buidlings are all historic and it is home to most of the city's hotels and many restaurants. It is nearly impossible to drive and park here so walking is best. Spend a day or two walking the streets and visiting the many boutiques and shops, or just sit in a cafe and watch people go by while you listen to live music. Even if shopping is not one of your highest priorities, you will want to visit Reverend Zombie's House of Voodoo Shop...if you dare! I got chills up and down my spine when I entered the door! A strange combination and collection of artifacts, some apparently related to voodoo and others not. Candles, incense, wooden Santos carving and images of saints made into candles. Odd things and/or animals hanging from the ceiling. I had such a strange feeling that I left without examining everything!! The "Haunted History of New Orleans" tour also queus right outside of this store. These tours are very popular and lines form quickly as we saw while we were waiting in our own long line at the "Preservation Hall" just across the street. If you've seen the movie "The Skeleton Key" (2005), you may want to search around to see if this store carries such things as brick dust or records by Papa Justify. Leave a Comment Address: 723 St. Peter Street, New Orleans 70116Phone: 504-486 633Directions: Directly across from the legendary "Preservation Hall."
