    Memorial Hall

We got to this area too late in the day to visit this museum, but I understand that Memorial Hall (Confederate Museum) contains the second largest collection of Confederate memorabilia in the world in the oldest continually operating museum in Louisiana. It was founded in 1891 by Confederate veterans who have donated most of the materials such as uniforms, battle flags, guns, and pictures. They also have an online store.

Tulane University has the letters and historical writings from this period.

The website says: Since reopening on Jan. 6, 2006 after Hurricane Katrina, the museum has struggled with reduced visitor traffic and other issues. The good news is that two difficult years have been endured, and we are that much closer to a return to normalcy.

Museum traffic increased slightly in 2007, and restoration and repair work on the roof was completed. A new fire escape was required as a part of the old building ownership lawsuit settlement, and work will begin on that project in 2008.

So that sounds as though the museum is open. But in another place it says

Notice! The museum is currently closed to the public due to ongoing renovation repairs. Phone calls and/or emails may not be returned due to interruption of service. We apologize for any inconvenience.
