tulane university is located on st. charles ave. across from audubon park in the garden district. tulane university was founded in 1834. tulane has a beautiful campus and is a nice place to visit in the garden district.
Loyola University sits on the St. Charles end of Audobon Park and is the largest Catholic University in the South and is known for their strong Law program. I took a stroll through the campus and found some interesting architecture and quiet neighborhoods around the campus. Campus tours can be arranged by calling the number below. Tulane University is also in the area.
New Orleans is home to several universities, but the ones I am best acquainted with are Tulane and Loyola Universities, conveniently located side-by-side on St. Charles Avenue. The two universities share library resources and concert venues. Take the streetcar up St. Charles Avenue and stroll through the small but scenic campuses on your way to the Audubon Zoo.
You can't miss Loyola University New Orleans. In the front of campus, there are huge letters spelling out LOYOLA -- although one of the O's was slightly damaged by Hurricane Gustav in 2008 -- and a big white statue which the students affectionately call Touchdown Jesus (look at the photo, and the reason for the nickname will become clear). Famous Loyola alumni include jazz musician Ellis Marsalis, former Secretary of the Navy Sean O'Keefe, and Xavier University President Norman Francis. Musician Harry Connick, Jr., went there for one semester. :)
Tulane University is especially well-known for its medical school. Famous Tulane alumni include the late Bruce Paltrow, director and father of Gwyneth; Amy Carter, author and daughter of President Jimmy Carter; and Michael DeBakey, pioneering heart surgeon.
There are often concerts and lectures at Loyola and Tulane that are open to the public. Check their websites.
This building clearly has the Loyola sign in front of it, but I have been unable to figure out exactly what building it is.
There are many different universities in the United States named Loyola. We have one in Baltimore. This Loyola (probably like all of them), is a Jesuit university.
Campus tours, conducted by student tour guides, are held Mondays - Fridays at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m
Loyola's main campus is located on 6363 St. Charles Avenue across from Audubon Park. You can get there on the St. Charles streetcar. The Broadway campus is located at 7214 St. Charles Avenue at the corner of Broadway.
Tulane is a private university which was founded in 1834 and has 11 schools and colleges offering undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees in architecture, business, engineering, law, liberal arts and sciences, medicine, public health and tropical medicine and social work. My dad knew some of the folks in the medical school.
Motto Non Sibi Sed Suis, translated as "not for one's self, but for one's own."
Visitors to campus can take part in information sessions and tours Monday through Friday during most of the calendar year and on Saturday mornings during the school year. You can get there on the St. Charles Streetcar. For more information, please call the Office of Admission at (504) 865-5731.
This is the site of the first Louisiana School in 1725. Father Raphael De Luxembourge Capuchin opened the first school in French colonial Louisiana and classes were in reading, writing, music, French, Latin and religion. The original house was purchased from Augustin Langlois.
While you are visiting Louisiana you should also take a tour of the universities. LSU...home of Mike the Tiger is an amazing campus full of history. Locally there are lots of bars and fun places to go for lunch. It is a true college town. The campus surrounds a beautiful lake and the buildings and houses are made of bricks.
I sight to see.
Another campus to visit is Tulane. You can pass the campus while taking the cable car through the town.
Here is the view of the lake at LSU. What a great place to study...ha ha.
A good walkable campus...very pretty, and accessible from the St. Charles streetcar line. Loyola is situated right next to Tulane, so you can get two for the price of one!
