This ferry has been scuttling across the Mississippi since 1827 from the foot of Canal Street over to Algiers. You have a great view of the New Orleans skyline and the moniker “Crescent City” takes on new meaning as you get to witness the river’s great bend up close and personally. Algiers is another world quite apart from the rumble on the other side. You can take interesting walks through the 19th century architecture of the district - one walk is historic in nature and the other is architectural. Exact fare of $2 each way is required. Be careful of ferry times or it will cost you a $25-30 taxi ride back over the bridge. Ride the ferry today for there is always movements afoot to put the little ferry in the dustbin of the past.

The Algiers Ferry is a free transportation service provided by the City of New Orleans to transport you across the Mississippi to its historic Algiers neighborhood on the West Bank. You can ride your bike onto the boat and for $1.00 you can drive your car depending on which boat they use. It leaves approximately every half hour from either side. It starts running at 6am and stops at midnight.

    The Ferry to Algiers

This ferry provides routine service for cars and pedestrians between the foot of Canal St and the Algiers Point neighborhood across the Mississippi River. It's $1.00 per car from Algiers, but free from Canal St. For pedestrians, it's free.

I never actually took it, but if you're staying in the French Quarter or downtown New Orleans, and are going to Algiers, then give it a try.
