The carriages that are used for rides in New Orleans are now being pulled by mules instead of horses. Mules are considered to be more heat resistant than horses. A good picture of a carriage being drawn by a mule is photo #5. This was not always the case. In 1950, we had a horse drawn carriage ride (photos 2, 3, and 4).

The carriage pictured in photo #1 was being used for some kind of movie or video. There are a line of people across the street standing by the wall just visible on the right. The traffic is being held up while they are filming.

They are filming where a guy and a girl go running across to get in the carriage. It apparently is supposed to be hot weather (although it was QUITE cold), and the boy was wearing a jacket when he did it the first time, so he had to remove the jacket and they had to shoot it all over again.

It was interesting to watch. We didn't take a carriage ride though.

One of the carriage companies is Royal Carriages which is conveniently located on Decatur Street at Jackson Square and on the corner of St. Louis and Royal Streets.

Don't you think horse and carriage rides add an element of romance when traveling? I can still recall a carriage ride we took in Bermuda one evening, with the crickets signaling our presence and the heady scent of Bouganvillea hanging in the air.

However, I've never taken a mule and carriage ride which is what you'll see in New Orleans. Due to the intense heat and humidity in warmer months, horses were replaced by mules who seem to be hardier and bothered less by these factors.

A half hour ride through the French Quarter costs $60 for up to four people or $120 for an hour's jaunt about town. A visit to the Garden District costs $180 for an hour and a half ride for four passengers; 8 total passengers can be included at $20 per person.

Many visitors chose to see New Orleans by this means and judging from their smiles, it looked to be a good choice!

You can catch a mule carriage at Jackson Square on Decatur Street, near Cafe du Monde.

Queued in front of Jackson Square are several mule-drawn carriages offering guided tours of the French Quarter. The drivers offer historic and folkloric perspective while incorporate personal anecdotes. When asked politely, they are more than willing to take or add some of you must-see sights.

This mode of travel works really well when it's raining (which can be often depending on the season) as most carriages are covered.

The cost is around $25.00 to $30.00 per person.

I thought it would be great to do this but Rob didnt want to. I also heard that it was alittle pricey. I dont know how much it is but it did look like fun.
I also saw a sign that they accept credit card here too.
Mostly I saw the horse and carriage in the French Quarter and there were a ton of them by Cafe Du Monde.

There is plentiful amounts of Tour guides operating in & around New Orleans on horse & carriage.
They will set you back about $20-50 USD but in my opinion is well worth it.
You get a chartered ride around all the best areas of the city including bourbon street, the people guiding you around are most friendly and helpful and they alwayssss give you a commentated tour on your way around.
Great romantic & stress free way to view the city and also map out possible places to see & ways of getting there. Take this option upon arrival, places you see & the tour guide can be helpful tools for your stay !!

They congregate around jackson square on side of road, almost like a taxi cab rank LOL

Length of carriage tours vary from one-half hour to 1-1/2 hour.

You'll see these horse drawn carriages all around the Quarter and the drivers are also tour guides, so if the weather is right, this is a great leisurely way to get acquainted with the area. It will cost $50 for a half hour (to rent the carriage) or $10 per person if you want to join another party (there might be up to six people in the carriage). The carriages will pick you up in front of Jackson Square on Decatur Street.

Plenty of carriages line up in Jackson Square just outside St Louis Cathedral. They will take you on a narrated 30 minute tour of the French Quarter for about $50.00. They will stop along the way to point out various things of interest.

We just drove there from Mississippi where we were staying.
We take a horse and buggy tour of the French Quarter. The tour and our guide was most informative. It lasted about 1/2 hour charging us $10.00 per person. We were a party of 4 and the driver was still looking for a tip at the end of the ride.
