    Pearl River Wildlife Management Area

    by Virtuous_Tourist Written May 1, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Near the town of Pearl River is the main road access to the large Pearl River Wildlife Management Area. Most of Honey Island Swamp is contained within it but the northern part of the area is drier and contains dense bottomland hardwoods subject to flooding by the Pearl River.

    Sonic: Not Too Many Places

by BluecatCanoe Updated Apr 20, 2007

Unfortunately 'Po-Boys Restaurant' closed up. The owner got sick from a mosquito bite and it is up for sale right now. The only place I stop in is Sonic that opened up on the highway. The small places like, Freiendly Fred's Gas Station, The Chevron Station, and Joyce's Grill are very small without a big menu. Hamburgers, chicken, and sandwiches. Maybe with all the peole moving in more real restaurants will open?

Used to get a good poboy but not now.

On full moon nights it is nice to canoe, but otherwise sitting in my back yard watching fireflys and listening to music is fun. Did you know:
The Chinese thought these twinkling little creatures came from burning grass. A European legend warned that if a lightning bug flew in the window, someone was going to die.

Aztecs used the term firefly metaphorically, meaning a spark of knowledge in a world of ignorance or darkness. American Indians collected lightning bugs and smeared them as decorations on their faces and chest.

They don't bite, they have no pincers, they don't attack, they don't carry disease, they are not poisonous, they don't even fly very fast.'

Pearl River is located off the Interstate system near Interstate I-12 and Interstate I-59 north of New Orleans and must be driven too. A good pick up truck and canoe would be the best thing to have to get around. Some like flat bottom boats as well. This picture is of Pump Slough under the Intersate 59 Bridge, the best boat launch to get to the West Pearl River.

'Jim's Feed', believe it not if Jim's is open I always stop in and bring friends. he has a snake collection, and a honey bee hive in the feed store. And in spring baby rabbits and chicks. You cannot miss the place because of the big rooster sign on top.

There are several great places to canoe. This is Porters River that goes from Pump Slough then connects with the West Pearl River, it is a days float, with plenty of places to stop and hike.

The Town of Pearl River, La. is just north of Slidell, La on the bank of the West Pearl River. It was a great place to catfish and once had a Catfish Festival, but lately the river has been low and the fishing not as good. The swamp around the area, often called Honey Island swamp is a beautiful place to see and canoe.

  • Careful with water critters.

For some reason this duck was following me around one day, so I decided to see if it would allow me to pick it up, then after that it followed me everywhere I went. The funny thing was it quacked to me all the time too. I wonder what it was trying to tell me? The only way it left me alone that day was when I left to go home.
