Local Fishing
  • Tip Rating:
  • Fishing is permitted within the park with proper permits. The website declares that fishermen have walked away from the area with "fine catches" of white perch, bream and bass, but locals tell a different tale. A local power plant has apparently corrupted the water of the Calcasieu River, and warnings within the park ask the fishermen to reduce their intake of certain species caught in the river to only a few meals per month. Be aware of what you're doing when walking off with the catch of the day. . .or you what know what you might be catching.

The park is located entirely within the Indian Bayou. Bald cypress and other towering trees rise directly from the still waters of the bayou, home to snakes, mammalian rodents and the occasional alligator. The park allows rafting within its boundaries and offers boats and a free launch for those who didn't bring their own. For those who prefer to walk on foot there is plenty of firm ground around the bayou on which to explore the park.

Apart from the raccoons, skunks and oppossums that might appear in the park's confines, the birds are quite familiar with the area waterways. Ducks, herons, egrets, pileated woodpeckers and several other species are common throughout the park. Please observe caution with wild animals however. Check with park personnel on regulations governing the appropriate treatment of all wildlife.

The park offers a few walking paths in which to explore its boundaries. Some skirt the Calcasieu River, some the park interior and some the bayou itself. Please keep to the path because the bayou keeps other areas muddy if not submerged. Most of the park's wildlife can be seen from any of the paths, but whether they appear or not the walks themselves are generally relaxing.

    Nature Center
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the middle of the park is the Nature Center (check at the office for operating hours). Besides the relics of rural life so prevalent among such centers, the center gives a snapshot of the park in general: its wildlife, its trees and natural resources and its rivers. Just behind the center in an enclosed compound is the park's deer pen, but the enclosure is so large that you might strain for ages to catch sight of the deer.

    Picnic Pavilion
  • Tip Rating:
  • Near the campground loop and the Indian Bayou is the park's picnic pavilion which can be reserved for special occasions. The playground lies within the vicinity, as well as the ducks and alligators that might be lurking in the bayou. If the weather is poor and the pavilion is open, there are few other places of shelter within the park. Call 1-877-CAMP-N-LA toll free (877-226-7652).
