Slidell Things to Do

  • Honey Island Swamp Tour

Well, I visited Honey Island Swamp Tours because it was its own entry for 1000 Things to Do Before You Die: USA Edition. Since I was in the area I thought I might stop by. Before you go, make sure to call ahead and make reservations. When I showed up there were many people there and the boats were full.I was a bit nervous going. I tend to get...

St. Tammany Parish is sort of like Harris County in Houston. It houses many different smaller cities. At least that's what I'm equating it with. In support of the beautiful landscape the parrish built 31 miles of connecting pavement for those to enjoy the tall pine trees and weather the area allows. The Trace connects Covington, Mandeville, Abita...

  • Southern Louisiana Cooking at it's best

Ray's is family owned and operated. There menu features a large variety of dishes in a conformable relaxed atmosphere. The menu included aged Midwestern beef steaks, lobster, southern classics, prime rib, Creole favorites, a variety of salads with freshly made dressings and much much more. The drinks are generous and the service is good. The...

  • Dine with the locals...

The very first night we rolled into town, we were tired and hungry and basically stopped at the first place we came across. Only about a mile from the place we stayed was a little local restraunt right on the water, Vera's. It was great, the laid back atmosphere was just what we were looking for, and the waitresses were so freindly, offering us...

There are several good restaurants in Slidell, Doug's on Robert Road, South Side Cafe on Pontchartrain Dr. where I cooked, and Phil's Marina Cafe on the Lake in Eden Isles. A new all you can eat Chinese Place on Old Spanish Trail is the best buffet in the area. The picture at left is one view from Phil's Marina Cafe, a great place to bring a boat...

Slidell Nightlife

  • by James0014 Written Oct 7, 2007

I had my 20 year reunion at Time Out Lounge in Slidell, and I could not believe how nice that place was. They Completely renovated the place and it is just the coolest place in town. The place is clean, the staff is very nice, and we just had the best time. A couple named Mike and Lori took the place over after Katrina and did most of the work inside. I think Mike went to Pearl River High. They took extra good care of all of our people, We sang Karaoke on the patio, and they even paid for my cab ride home after I had too much to drink. You would have to see the place to believe it, it has an ultra plush interior, an icebar, a 100 year old hand painted ceiling, lots of big flat screens, and a huge patio that we used for our event. I own a small business and now I host all of my business meetings there in the evenings. They will let you display your powerpoint presentations on the TV in the back. Very nice place for adults.

Dress Code: Collar on your shirt, No smoking, And no trashy people, Slidell finally has a nice place

An automobile is a must there are few Taxi's and no public transportation in the area. Drive in, rent a car, but do not expect any bus to stop and get you around.

The North Shore Shopping Center is a mall and shopping area full of common retail stores known in the region. The mall didn't look too appealing (plus I was so tired after the swamp tour). So, I decided to stop at Pier One Imports. I got some good souvenirs for my aunt and mom. Drove around the rest of the area (across the street and such). There was a Target, Best Buy, Starbucks, etc. Since I have those in my neighborhood I didn' shop much. But, if you've forgotten anything on your trip or want to get some extra clothes, cds, etc. you can certainly find it here!

What to buy: Anything from regional retail shops

    What to pay: Normal...

  • Wildlife All Around

There is wildlife all around the Pearl River in Slidell for the River community. Can you imagine getting in your boat and having to steer around alligators?!? And the birds are beautiful, especially the hawks and Blue Herons. Also, the insects are everywhere. Dragonflies are HUGE!

  • Living on the River

It's always amazing to see how others on our big planet live their lives. I was intrigued by the River community and their simplistic lifestyle. The swamp tour guide was sharing how many of the houses on the river do not have roads that get them there. They must park at the car at the docking ramps and then get on their boats to get to the houses....

Slidell Off The Beaten Path

  • Damage inflicted by Hurricane Katrina

On August 29, 2005, my home city of Slidell, La, received a direct hit from category 5 Hurricane Katrina. Sustained winds in Slidell were significantly stronger than those felt in the devastated city of New Orleans. Slidell is northeast of New Orleans, on the Mississippi state line. Much of Waveland, MS, which borders Slidell on the southeast, was...

  • Fishing on Pearl River

While taking the swamp tour the guide told us all about the good bass fishing on the Pearl River. They have plenty of different competitions for it. Some die hard fisherman even live on the lake itself. Very interesting. There are not many ramps around. So you'll definitely need to get a map to see where the ramps are. One of them would be where...

Favorite thing: Slidell was named for John Slidell, Louisiana attorney, Senator, and Ambassador. It's history dates to the lumber and brick industry located there on the rail road line. Now it is more of a suburb of New Orleans than an industrial town, although St. Joe Brick Works is still in operation.
