This nature trail was the first first National Scenic Byway in the Gulf South and is about 180 miles. We took it after we arrived at our hotel. When we drove through it, it remembered us the most about Florida's swamps but just a bit different, we didn't see any indian village on the trip.

The trail takes you through the outback of Louisiana. When you start on the LA27 as we did you will go pass the visitor center which is located next to the Calcasieu Lake.

After that you go through the Sabine Wildlife refuge where there is a walking trail (take some bug repellant).

The trail goes past Holly Beach, where you can get on the beach with your car, then after a short drive you can take the free ferry to continue the trail along the Cameron Prairie Refuge and Sweet Lake (Zoetermeer ?).

We had the time to stop at Sabine and Holly Beach. In Sabine it was a strange idea that the gators were in the water just next to the walking trail and there was nothing to stop them to get on the walking trail. We didn't finish the walking trail because we where attacked by all kind of bugs that wanted to bite us, unfortunalty our bug repellant was in the hotel :-( but for the part they didn't bother us it was beautiful.
