Waking up in the semidarkness as the sky just turns pearly gray, no sounds can be heard besides our whispering voices as Lou and I conspire to venture out and watch the sunrise. Driving around the empty island and finding the perfect spot nestled in between Otter Point and Thunder Hole to watch the sunrise by ourselves while everyone else was either in bed or up on Cadillac Mountain..

The wonderful smells of pine, flowers and the sea on the breeze, the sound of the waves and the seagulls as the country's 1st rays of sunlight came over us.

On our second morning in Acadia, we were greeted by huge amounts of rolling fog after a very rainy night. We were determined to make the best of it so we figured on a foggy day, a visit to the lighthouse was in order. Though visibilty was a bit limitted, Acadia was still beautiful, and we got to see things we might have skipped if the sun was shining and the beach was calling. Besides it wouldn't be a visit to Acadia without the park wearing a fuzzy, soft, fog mantle for at least one day!

Standing on the rocks by the lighthouse, hearing the occasional foghorn and the bells on the buoys clanging, watching ships mystically appear out of the fog, and dolphins playing in the surf

Acadia is about so many things, so many landscapes, so many feelings, and most of all...so many different weather patterns. Take the fog for granted for this is a major piece of Acadias backdrop. Don't expect clear blue days all the time, I know that is nice but, FOG is pretty as well. I was natures audience as she rolled fog in and swallowed Mt. Desert Island whole.

It was cold inside the rustic building so we kept out coats on for what seemed an eternity, watching others sloppily enjoying their bounty. Our turn came up and we finally had the beauties set before us. Though I am an experienced eater of crabs, I had only had one other lobster in my life and D had never even seen one cooked before. But after a little fumbling around, I got them open and the first succulently sweet shreds of lobster meat entered our mouths. I must admit, we were a bit shocked when we first heard the price at the counter but it only took a few seconds of this taste sensation in our mouths to make us fully realize that we had made a good choice. It was worth every penny.

There were a few options but we decided on the Gorham Mountain Trail, as the closer Beehive Trail was another iron-rung affair. We drove by the latter without giving it much thought and soon found ourselves on the easy trail heading back into the high country of the park. We reached the summit in no time and it was anticlimactic walking on a trail that had families out with their dogs for an afternoon stroll. Not wanting to return the same way, we were left with only one choice given the time we had left of daylight. We would have to go down the Beehive. There was another couple sitting at the top of it, enjoying the views over the coast, when we arrived. Not wanting to encroach on their turf, we got on the treacherous path down with little time to re-think it. I am sure they thought us a bit mad to do the trail in this direction as they soon left for the more gentle descent of the Gorham Trail. Soon we found ourselves on very similar iron rungs, utilizing all limbs in climbing our way back to safety, all the while shaking our heads at our lack of forethought. Back at the car with shaky legs, we could not wait to get to our reward now. We had done double duty on the rungs and now it was time to have a few Precipice Ales for our efforts.

If you did some tough hikes, reward yourself with a great lobster dinner at one of the local lobster pounds. It ain't cheap but you will never forget it and besides, you deserve it.

The weather had been just incredible but somehow the clear sunny skies lacked the character one associates with the rugged Maine coast. One afternoon, we got a break of sorts when a huge storm made its way to Bar Harbor. Before the big rains arrived, the sky grew gray and winds whipped up the waves just a notch, finally giving us the atmospheric New England look we feared originally would be our fate for the whole visit. We decided to succumb to another great Maine tradition and headed over to a local lobster pound and sank our teeth into some of the sweet flesh its cold waters are famous for. It was a cool little place, very informal and homey. The lobster boilers were outside with smokestacks spewing black puffs intermittently into the already dark foreboding sky. Like the novices we were, we walked up to the counter a bit nervous about how to order. The old man off to the side was like a New England carved wooden figure, with a face chiseled by the winds of time and the elements. He was gruff but friendly and once realizing our lack of experience instructed us of how to order and the prices. We opted for the biggest and most expensive ones he had and soon he had them heaped onto the scale, with them hand-cuffed with rubber bands like two escaped convicts on their way to death row. It was an odd sight and Doreen was delighted to see the oddly beautiful creatures even if they were soon to be our dinner. He then scooped them up into a net bag and off they went to the boilers outside. We paid up the $48 that included a couple of side dished and iced tea, and took our seats waiting for our number to be called. (concluded below in Fondest Memory)

  • D tackles the Precipice - Acadia National Park
    D tackles the Precipice
    by richiecdisc
Though Acadia National Park can be enjoyed from your private vehicle or park shuttle, you will have a nicer time if you try and do some walking to avoid traffic. Though we had some amazing drives and I got my best photos on early morning outings in the car, our best time was doing the Precipice Trail.

Sometimes being smug can backfire on you. The Precipice Trail at Arcadia National Park is designed to do in one direction only. The steep nature of the terrain dictates this. So, I smartly took the sheerest way up, allowing for an easier path back down once on top. It was rough going on the way up: often necessitating the use of strategically placed metal handholds and occasionally ladder rungs, to get from one rocky outcropping to the next. It was hard to believe that this “hike” was one of the more popular in the park. Once on top, we heaved a sigh of relief on seeing the signs stating that it was not suggested to do the route in reverse, and to take an alternate path back down. After enjoying the views, we made our way back to the car and the new route was indeed gentler in its descent. Eventually it did meet up with the Precipice and we were forced to do a few of the more hairy parts in reverse. Having passed this little test, we were giddy and ready to head to the local brewery to have their Precipice Pale Ale as a just reward, but the sun shone madly and even the lure of beer rewards could not sway me to spend this perfect autumn day inside. Though the trail had been difficult, it had been a short hike and with our early start, there was still half a day ahead of us. So, we opted to do another hike nearby. I hereby proclaim, "I will not ever pay more than 1.75 for cash machine use again."
I tried a few of Bar Harbors machines and all were 2.50 to dispense cash. This is ludicrous. What are they doing that is worth that much? One time in Tampa I broke this promse, but I guess at that point I didn't even have this proclamation. I was in a strip club called Mons Venus. I rolled in there with 9 other dirty skateboarders with maybe, at best, 20 dollars between all of us. This was going to need strategy to pull a night off here without angering the performers. So the dancers shaked and slid up and down polls intermittently walking to the end of the stage to get grubby man hands to sink some dollars into her thong waistband. The green papers were dwindling quick and soon we all ran dry. The girls can sense it as we all played the "give me a better performance card". Thats when things got ugly, and the women lashed out. Women one takes my freinds head and seriously busts his glasses with her chest chubbies. Women two walks by me offering me a swift jab and later the same to another of my friends. These ladies are agressive. In an attempt to quell the violence I head to the cash machine. I figure 20 dollars would hold them at bay, I inject my bankcard, push buttons and pay a service charge of 5 dollars. They got me, acting on scaretactics like the Bush administration. The 20$ blows to ashes within the next 10 minutes. We plan for an escape. We all run for the door in concert. My friend drove all of us there in a County Esquire Stationwagon with four inoperable doors. Our only choice into the escape vehicle was all piling into the back gate door, which already had no window due to disfunction. We rip out of the parking lot as a few of the strippers and bouncers offer us the middle finger for our departure. We thank them with a toot of the horn and head home.

Food was cheap in Bar Harbor though. Check the price on one of the best breakfast's I have ever had.

C'mon, don't be lazy, click on the photo. Within the velvety mist theres a surprise. This is my favorite photo of the Acadia trip. We were walking a path that led to THE BASS HARBOR LIGHT and presented before us, was this Sail boat mast tearing through the fog. Great!

I have never gotten close enough to a seagull to see the iris lines in his/her eye. Yuki brought this detail via the camera lens. I want to thank you seagull for standing so still for the photos. As in most coastal areas along the eastern seaboard, seagulls take up residence, only up north they grow in size.
