View from the Ocean Trail by kazander Even if you don't do the entire length of the 3 mile Ocean Trail, you must get out of the car and explore it at least a little bit. It's breathtaking views are incredible! The trail starts at Sand Beach taking you past Thunder Hole and ends at Otter Point. be careful along the edges of the rocks sometimes they are slippery, but for the most part, this is an easy hike. Cadillac Mountain by kazander Cadillac Mountain is the highest point along the eastern seaboard. It stands a majestic 1,532 feet. You can hike up the steep and precarious, Precipice Trail to get to the summit, but you must check with a ranger to see if the trail is closed due to the nesting of Peregine Falcons. It was closed when we visited. There also is a road that you can drive up to the top. Most people take this much easier route. Busloads of people unload here, it can get very, very crowded. It has lovely views, but as Lou said to me, "It's pretty , but I'd rather be down there in the middle of it all" Leave a Comment

Bar Harbor by kazander Bar Harbor, or Bah Hahbah as the locals say, is a cute little touristy town on Mount Desert Island right next to Acadia. It has lots of shops and tons of restaurants, you should really stop by for a walk around and definately some dessert at the Cafe This Way. You can get whale watching tours from here and even catch the "Cat" over to Nova Scotia if your so inclined. I have a page on it if you'd like more info. Sunrise by kazander Wake up for the sunrise! Acadia gets the United States first rays of morning sunshine. Everyone and their mother goes up to Cadillac Mountain for this event, so we choose a more solitary spot between the Otter Cliffs and Thunder Hole . I was even able to hear the mountainous noise from where we were! The only other person we saw was another photographer but he was about 500 yards from where we decided to plant ourselves. An amazing event well worth losing a few winks of sleep! check out the link! It's to Lou's photography webage! Leave a Comment

bass harbor head Lighthouse by kazander Over on the western side of the island on the southern tip, is the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. You can't actually go INTO the lighthouse, but there are 2 trails which will take you to spots with great views. the path to the left takes you down to the rocky "beach" It is a more difficult walk but the views are incredible. The path to the right is an easy walk that takes you right up to the lighthouse and gives great ocean views. We spent most of our time to the left on the rocks. We saw lots of animal life while sitting on the shore. Seals, porpoises and lots of birds, possibly an otter...but I'm not sure, it could've been a little seal. The lighthouse was built in 1858, and at the time of our visit it was moving day for the new resident. Leave a Comment

Thunder hole by kazander A big stop along the Park Loop Road, at Thunder hole you will inevitably hear people discussing, "was it high tide or low tide that we were supposed to come here?" "mommy, when does it make the big noise?" Lucky for me, I did get to hear the thundering boom, though I was a bit further down the towards Otter Point at the time, where we were watching the sunrise. It really is incredible! But when we actually visited the stop off point, we didn't hear anything, guess it was the "conditions". Some people had been waiting there quite a long time! It is a beautiful spot though, worth checking out. try getting there either early in the morning or later in the evening when most of the crowds have passed. Leave a Comment

Park Greeter by kazander For a nice overview, with some key stopping points along the way, take a ride around the Park Loop Road. A beautiful drive, it will take you past Sand beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Point, Otter Cove, Otter Cliffs, just to name a few. You can park in the designated lots along the way, or even along the right side of the road! There are signs suggesting you do so. Be sure to get out of the car though. Even if you aren't a hiker there are many places that are easy to walk to. And if you are a hiker, you're in for a treat! There are many trails and carriage roads to explore on foot. Leave a Comment

Somes Sound by kazander Somes Sound is the only fjord on the eastern coast of the United States. It is the 7 mile strech of water that separates the Eastern and Western halves of Mount Desert Island. When we stopped here to have a look on the way to Bass Harbor there were quite a few people fishing along the shore. Leave a Comment Directions: Get off of Route 3 and hop onto Sargent Drive for the best views of the sound. It will meet back up with Route 3, it's just a more scenic way to go

start of Precipice Trail by Myndo The Precipice Trail. - In the information brochure of the Visitor Centre it is labelled as STRENUOUS (step grades, many steady climbs). But since it is only 1.6 miles (2.6km) we wanted to do this one - the view on the point should be great, we heard. At the Beginning of the Trail you can find some signs (see picture). On it you can read: "Avoid throwing or dislodging rocks, an extreme hazard to people below". And: "only do this if you are physically fit and have good footwear." I have to say: unlike some other places where the americans tend to exaggerate it with their caution this here has to be taken serious! It is on some places more climbing than walking, there are iron rings and ladders, else if you couldn't go up at all. But it pays to climb up there. At the top the view in every direction is wonderful - and down you can take an easier Trail... Leave a Comment Address: Acadia National ParkDirections: Champlain Mountain

Otters Point and Fog by chodearm Cliffs and rocky appendages weave a not-so straight coastline around Mt. Desert Island forming coves a plenty. Walk the Ocean Trail to the near end down at the southern tip of Acadia's loop road. Be sure to venture onto smaller off shoot trails to meet feet to rock to gain access to the parks most defining feature, the cliffs and waters constant battle. Otters Point tends to be the most photogenic of the outages but pay respect to all the contours. Get out of your car, PLEASE! Leave a Comment
