    Maine in the Fall

    by Ewingjr98 Updated Dec 29, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fall is a beautiful time of year in Maine: cold, but not frigid with howling winds like in the depths of winter; the leaves changing on the trees; little if any snow on the ground to wade through. The only problem for us hunters is that the game animals (especially the hares) are spread out with plenty of cover on the ground, so they are harder to find. In the winter, cover is sparse, so the hares tend to be clustered in larger numbers in the thick cover.

    Road Trip to Skowhegan

    by Ewingjr98 Updated Nov 30, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Skowhegan has the closest grocery store and Wal-Mart to Bingham. They also have numerous restaurants and a lot of specialty stores you don't often find in small towns. My favorite thing here is the New Balance Factory Store, famous among those of us who enjoy running.

    Wildlife

Keep an eye open for wildlife. The day I arrived on my first Maine trip (2001? 2002?) there was a young moose standing in the back yard at our lodge. One of my first trips into the woods, we saw two moose standing in the middle of the rarely used logging road. One winter dad and I found a moose antler shed, and throughout the woods you will see all kinds of moose sign from thier tracks deep in the snow to moose droppings. Bald eagles are also relatively common in central Maine.

    Moscow Radar Site

    by Ewingjr98 Updated Nov 1, 2006

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Moscow (Maine not Russia) is home to what is considered the world's largest radar...the US Air Force's Over the Horizon Backscatter (OTH-B) Radar with its $1.5 billion price tag, the huge radar panels bounced a signal off the ionosphere to detect objects on or over the Atlantic Ocean up to 2,000 miles away. Most amazing is probably the fact the the radar took some 20 years to complete from its beginnings in the 1970s and was used for just one year during the 90s. When the Cold War ended, this technology became obsolete. Don't be too worried, smaller, cheaper, and more mobile radars are out there to deter, and if necessary, identify and track missile launches from rogue nations like North Korea.

An article from Boston.com talking about the decision to dismantle the radar site.

Here's a satellite image from Google Earth.

As usual, Global Security has the best website with numerous aerial photos and a topo map of the site.

And this maps shows the coverage of the radar and its sister site in Oregon.

    Snowshoe hare hunting

    by Ewingjr98 Updated Mar 19, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Bob Howe at Pine Grove Lodge loves to hunt for snowshoe hares. While other guides might take the quiet winter season off, he brings in hunters every week. Bring your own beagles or run his large pack of impressive hare chasers! Some hunters come for the day, others (like us) spend an entire week.

Maine's small game hunting license will cost you about $58. Hiring Bob for a day of hunting, three meals, and a warm bed is about $125 per day. Spending time in the quiet Maine woods with your dad... priceless.

    Follow the hare tracks!

    by Ewingjr98 Updated Apr 12, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you get bored in Bingham, remember, you are in the heart of great snowshoe hare country! Just look for their unique, large tracks in the snow. Even though the big tracks are made by the back feet, they land in front when the hare is running. In this photo, the hare was running away from the photographer.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Located just west of Bingham in Pleasant Ridge, Pine Grove Lodge is where we always stay in Bingham. Bob and Andrea Howe are the hosts of this establishment -- Bob is the Master Maine Guide and his wife operates the inn.

On our trips to PGL, we always see an abundance of wildlife including snowshoe hares, moose, bald eagles, and black bear.

The PGL offers fun during all seasons. Their guided trips include kayaking, hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and wildlife photo safaris.
