Planning to hike Katahdin?
Favorite thing: This website has everything you need to plan your hike -
Fondest memory: Although challenging all the way, from getting into the park early enough to be allowed to hike to the summit to actually undertaking the hike, this is an excellent hike! One of the best in New England!
Most people visit Millinocket...
Favorite thing: Most people visit Millinocket to be close to the Baxter State Park, where Mt. Katahdin lives. Millinocket itself is very small and simple, but hiking or camping in the Baxter State Park is a must.
Fondest memory: We arrived in Baxter State Park very early in the morning, because you basically must arrive at the gate no later than 5 am to get in the park. We started hiking North and South Brother at 6 am. There was not a single soul on the mountains. The morning was glorious. The rising sun, the morning mist, the colorful clouds, the chirping birds who had just waken up, the dew still on the leaves... It was truly unforgettable! We were standing on the peak by 9 am, and the sun was casting shadows on Mt. Katahdin and the Allagash Waterway, and all the wilderness there was north of civilization. I had such a great time there!
