You can get good street maps for Maine from Rand Mcnally or American Maps or AAA (if you are a member) but one of the better guide books is called "Maine: Explorers Guide" by Tree and English. It is full of ideas of where to go and what to see, best places to eat and shop, and some important history items that round out your vacation experience. (It is available at many of your better book stores like Barnes and Nobles).
Even in the months of July and August, most Maine nights can get chilly. The temperature almost always gets below 70F or 21C at night and on many summer nights it can get even colder. If you're camping out in the spring and fall, expect it to be really chilly. When we camp in Maine, we always bring a sleeping bag rated for very wintery temperatures and a pad to put under it so that we have insulation from the cold ground. Note, in the photo, that our little Italian greyhound, Conrad, has two differnt colored eyes.
If you are packing for a visit to Maine in the summer, assume pleasant temperatures from late May through mid-September. On the occasional rainy day, it can be cool, so bring jeans and a jacket, but usually you'll find shorts and a shirt to be perfect. A typical Maine summer day will be cool, moderately humid with temperatures around 75-80F/24-27C. However, the summer of 2005 featured some days hotter than that, which can be unpleasant in a place usually considers airconditioning a frivoulous, useless expense. In winter, temperatures are usually below freezing -- often well below, and snow is common. Bring wool sweaters, long underwear, scarves, gloves and water replellant pants/coats. Boots for snow are important.
As light as possible, either carry on the ferry or ship at the freight office at the ferry dock. Shorts, t-shirts, bathing suit, towels, slicker, sweat shirt, sandles and sneakers. Calamine lotion, alcohol ( to wash off if you get in contact with poison ivy). bug spray. Lots of film or lots of room on your digital card. Beach towels for the cove (after tide comes in), and Kennedy Beach. Kyack, tennis racket, bicycle, fishing pole with strong line. Lots of books, most cottages don't have t-v, so read, read, read. Game boards and cards are also fun. Most islanders are great cribbage players, and will challenge you.
Wet weather gear is essential for everyone tackling longer hikes like Mt. Katahdin. Wide angle for city photography and landscapes, zoom for wildlife. A good tent will save you heaps of money, rooms ain't cheap on the Maine coast. Lost of film, you will need it when driving around coastal towns like Dublin on the Main coast.
Make sure you have some kind of rain gear with you. If you plan to do any serious hiking, bring some good hiking boots that are waterproof. At the very least, make sure you have an umbrella along, for it rains a lot up north.I'd bring warm clothes, too. Even in July it won't get much hotter than 80F or 28C. Usually it's 5 - 10 degrees cooler. Pack cotton flannel shirts, a sweater, and maybe a leather jacket because the coast can be very windy. Insect repellant - the best you can get!!! The mosquitoes a.k.a. 'skeeters' are voracious in the woods. Teams of two or three have been known to carry campers off for a leisurely munch/lunch. ;-)
Bring warm clothing and go in the summer. It gets cold up there! Whatever works, or if you don't have it, whatever will do. If you don't have that either, at least bring a pencil and paper for sketching. Don't forget a healthy appetite! You'll never get another opportunity like you get here.
I can only speak for the days in summer, but if you're there then, you'd be fine in shorts or even long pants. It's in-between temperature, where it's not too hot, but it's not too cold either. Anyway, temps were in the 70's.
Just a regular old napsack will get the job done In the summer months it can reach temps in the high 90's and at night in the 60's to 70's.In the winter months be prepared to have warm clothing. insect repellant in the summer months (black flies) Dont leave food out cause of bears
From October to April it can be quite crisp outside, so pack long sleve shirts and heavy coats. Skiing is popular in the Winter, which is usually around 20-30(F) degress. In the Summer, June through September is very nice, mostly never to hot, mostly 75-85 degress. Pack shorts and a bathing suit. I wouldn't advise smimming in the ocean even in the hottest day in August cause the ocean water temp. never hits near 70. The lakes however are perfect!
