Coach and Principal Willis Phair picked 9 for his team from an enrollment of 28 boys.
Before the Heal Point System, there were the usual Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D classifications , but small schools had the ability to play the larger schools.
-This team won every game in their regular season...
-Won the Eastern Maine Championship...
-Won the State of Maine Championship...(over two Class A teams.)
-Faced Boston Latin at Boston Gardens for the New England Championship.
Know this:
Boston Latin had an all-male student body of 1,800...and had played on the Garden floor 6 times during their regular season..
I'm not certain that players on the Patten team had even seen a glass backboard before.
~David vs.Goliath~
Patten Academy brought home the New England Championship trophy by winning in overtime..35-32

Insider Tip:
Please consider re-reading what I have written and think about it.
Personal Note:
-I attended Junior High School at the Academy.
-I had wonderful teachers throughout my school years...and am grateful for their efforts to enlighten me.
"Ohhhh, the futility."
-I fondly recall walking to school, when huge Dutch Elms mirrored each side of the street. They cast mottled shade on throngs of school kids whom, like myself, navigated their way to the Academy each morning under their canopy.
*school kid sounds here*
I enjoyed many happy hours of playing marbles, flag football, and basketball while attending there with my classmates.
-Sometimes... just for fun... I would study too.
Footnote: One of the players on the Championship team went on to win the Lottery..
"How lucky is this guy?"
