Insider Tip:You can purchase an electronic ultrasonic whistling device that you attach to the front of your car that will repel deer...Be extra careful on the installation though, because if you put it on backwards, you may be calling them to you instead.)

Black Bears...Ursus Americanus
Bears are common in Maine.
-I believe there are around 23,000 or so.
-They weigh between 250-600 lbs. and are generally deep brown or black with a tan muzzle.
-They are about 5-6 feet long and are most active just before and just after dawn and dusk.
-They can run up to 35 miles per hour and are powerful swimmers and climbers.
-They can be roused from hibernation.
-They are meat eaters, but eat mostly fruits, nuts, and insects.
(I guess that makes them omnivores.)
-Bears will eat human food.
Keep all camp food in a sealed container.
*Easiest is to put it in your car or hang it in a bear bag. (The food... not the bear. ;-)
If you decide to ignore this tip you are probably asking for trouble.
If you're lucky...only raccoons will show. Hopefully, ones without rabies.
