This Park in Poland is the site of Poland Spring Water bottling plant beginnings. The original spring is supposedly preserved there Currently the water is obtained at a spring/well near by. There are hiking trails and the buildings have a cafe and gift shop of course. I went off season and found it a very peaceful spot. There is a virtua tour of the bottling plant in the main museum.

There are a number of legends about how Poland was named which involve the Indian Warrior Chief Poland. Also there is a widespread assution that it has something to do with people fro the Country Poland. But the real story is just as interesting as the myth. Moses Emery the first male child born in Bakerstown (now Poland) petitioned the court of MAssachusetts which Maine was then a part of . for the incorporation of the town . He chose for it's name the title of his favorite Hymn "Poland" It is a hymn based on a Polish tune See the English adaptation here

If you do not want to stay at the Mining camp you can tag along for the day to visit a mine and collect minerals. Take your own bag lunch or purchase one and stay for supper with the lodgers by prior arrangement with Mary

1893 the Maine State building was the state pavillion for the World Columbian Exposition at the Chicago World's Fair. Hiram Ricker purchased the Maine State Building in 1894 and moved it by train from Chicago to DAnville Junction and then Horse drawn wagons carried the pieces by land to the present site. It was opened soon after as a library and art museum as part of Poalnd's Centennial Celebration.

Favorite thing: Poland is such a tiny out of the way place. You must intentionally look for it otherwise you will pass it by. Find artist Katherine Rohnert at 335 Mequire Hill Rd PO Box 163, West Poland Me 04291 . Telephone 207 9982267. email KRohnert@aol.com
Fondest memory: I met Katherine Rohnert at Harvest Hill Farms where some of her work was on display. She is a gracious pleasant person who was very pleased to have her work mentioned at our vt pages She produces land scapes and seascapes and is active in the POland preservation society although she has only lived in Poland a short time.
