Take a walk around so you can appreciate the variety of architecture.
Two places in particular:
City Hall. Check out this building! The architecture is totally unexpected for such a new city. It's on Congress Street.
Customs House on Fore Street. This was built in 1867 and is really neat.
City Hall - located on Congress Street, this building is an example of Second Renaissance Revival architecture and sports a beautiful clipper ship weathervane.
Here I am standing at the top of the steps in front of Portland's very impressive City Hall. Hey, I was just surprised to be here!
The City Hall is located at 389 Congress Street and is open Monday through Friday from 8-4:30.
It was built between 1909-1912 in the Second Renaissance Revival style according to portlandmaine.com.
Merrill Auditorium is the historic auditorium at Portland City Hall. It's home to the Portland Symphony Orchestra and PCA Great Performances. The performance schedule is a little light in the summer months - with the exception of the amazing PORTopera company - but there's plenty to choose from the rest of the year.
