    Go on a Windjammer Cruise

by johncudw Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Sleep in cabins and get to participate in running the ship.
Many day cruise, Not a three hour tour.
These folks are hoisting up the main sail.
The ships are mainly schooners like they have
in the America's Cup races. Average ship holds 20 people,
    some more than that.
    Looks like fun, doesn't it?

    Visit the Wharf

by painterdave Written Feb 13, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Rockland is a major town with the fishing business using a wharf. You can drive and park and walk along the area and docks to see the activities. Featured below are shots from the fishery off loading fish that will be used for bait for the lobster traps.
If you like to see boats of all sizes, this is a place to stop and check out.

    Beach Combing

by painterdave Written Feb 12, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are plenty of beaches to walk along, and also rocks abound where the waves crash and the sea gulls fly. Just don't get too close to the edge of a rock cliff, as some people have slipped and didn't make it out.
Here are some photos of things you will see along the water as you hike along.
This is a good day, no admission charge, but better than Disneyland, if you ask me.
You can find some things along the way, if you are lucky. See my last photo of what I found on the beach that day.
There are plenty of places to picnic, but the town provides tables just outside of town. No other tables after that, you have to rough it a little sitting on the big rocks.

    Lobster Festival Parade

by painterdave Written Aug 11, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Once a year the whole town of Rockland turns out to celebrate Lobster with a giant parade. People from all over Maine come to participate. There are marching bands, bands on floats, numerous bagpipe bands, air bands, clowns, shriners and festival princesses and a queen, plus all the local politicians get into the act.
If you attend this parade expect it to last way over an hour and a half. Bring a chair.
See my videos which show a small part of the parade.

Ferry to Monhegan Island, Penobscot Bay, Maine

by ladyanne Written Aug 18, 2005

This is the car ferry that runs back and forth to Monhegan Island, Maine, one of the most important islands in Maine that has kept the tradition of a true fishing trade and lifestyle of island life.
Including the school that services all of the island children.

This island is also home to the wonderful restored lighthouse of Monehegan, which is now the home of the famous artist and his father Jamie and Andrew Wyeth.
Other Maine painters were inspired and painted here including Rockwell Kent.

    Rockland "Harbor Master "Building. Maine

by ladyanne Updated Aug 3, 2005

The "Harbor Master" is just that. He is the master of the harbor, overlooking and keeping things in order. He takes care of the moorings and docks and dorys. Keeping care of radar messages and other needs of the people who sail and boat.

This building also serves as a bath-house and library for the sailors.

    Rigging the Sails...Rockland Harbor, Maine

by ladyanne Updated Aug 3, 2005

My brother Peter's Sailboat, "Chance A'long" which means catching a wind by chance in sailing terms, his dory is called "Second Chance", which is fitting to it's purpose.

Peter docks his 26 ft. sailboat in Rockland, being it to be a safe and easy access harbor.

There is no feeling like sailing, when you turn the motor off, and set the sails, all you can hear tis he wind, the water, the gulls and the flapping of the sails....so peaceful, it forces you to stop thinking and worrying....just take in the sun, sky and sea.

Rockland Harbor... Sailing Ships and Pleasure Boat

by ladyanne Written Aug 3, 2005

Sailing is probably the number one favorite of those who visit by car or by boat.

The boats in the harbor are varied and beautiful, even the one that failed to sail after it was built to take an invalid daughter all over the world. Some nick-name it "The Pirate Ship". Rockland is now it's permanent home.

Rockland Harbor...is one of the best on the coast for docking your boat. Well protected, has a shuttle service for rides to your boats if you do not want to use your dory.

Also a Harbor Master, and a great place for taking showers, etc. if you are sailing along the coast.

We pulled ropes, we sang Broadway Show tunes, we ate and generally spent tons of time unwinding from real life. A very nice blend of passengers -- some of which we are still in contact with!
Gorgeous scenery and great company! This picture was taken from a cove where we had dinner that evening. You can see the schooner anchored in the background.
