Harry the Rockport Harbor master raised a wild seal from a pup. He and his family named this seal Andre. For about 10 years the were constant companions. During the warmer months Andre lived in the harbor. During the long hard winters the harbor iced over and Andre would swim away. Every spring he found his way home to Rockport and Harry.
In 1978 The town honored Andre with a life sized granite statue and the title of honorary harbormaster. Andre was on hand to help with the ceremony!
A movie was made based on this true story. They used creative license and had a young girl as the primary companion to Andre.
At least one childrens book has been written on this amazing relationship. Written by Fran Hodgkins, titled: Andre - The Famous Harbor Seal
