Elm Cottage: Cosy, classy B&B caters to vegetarians, Searsport

LynnPribus Says:  While I'm a pretty strict vegan, my husband is not. Yet he enjoyed this rather new B&B (opened July of 2008 as much as I did. Janet, the innkeeper, bent over backwards to accommodate special needs (like my husband wanting coffee at 5 am) and served up very generous and...

An Unexpected Treat

We were just driving through this beautiful little town on 10/10/09 and ran across a wonderful fall festival here. This was such an unexpected treat. There was a pumpkin contest going on and we were given a token so that we could vote for our favorite. We stopped into the local coffee shop and there were treats baked by local students -- who are were all cute, friendly and wonderful bakers. There were also artists sketching a nearby church. What a fun way to spend a pretty fall day!!

Maine is Beer Country

Favorite thing: This is not so specific to Searsport, but Maine is home to a great brewing culture. There are many microbrewers in Maine, some of which have grown to national size (Geary's, in particular). The great thing is that there are many very small brewers that only suppliy for the immediate area, or even just one pub.

Some brewers and locales to look out for are:

Andrew's Brewing Company in Lincolnville
Sunday River Brewing Company in Bethel
Gritty McDuffs in Portland
Atlantic Brewing Company and Bar Harbor Brewing Company, both in Bar Harbor

There are many brewers up there, so ask your barman about the local favorite.
