Maine is one of the safest states in the U.S. and boasts a very mild temperature during the summer months. However, winters can be long and harsh if your not prone to enjoying winter sports and activites. Temps can drop to 20 below and windchill factors can drive it down to around 50 below on some occassions. Snowfall, while not as bad as times of old, can still drop 12 to 15 inches of the white stuff easily. As far as DANGERS go just make sure you bring plenty of warm clothes if visiting in the winter. Otherwise, you should be very safe!!
Be careful, there's a lotta moose! Really, watch out, especially at night, but even in the day time. We saw this small moose less than 30 minutes after entering the state and seeing numerous signs warning us of moose crossings. There are huge flashing signs warning you of these animals... well, warning you about not hitting them! This one was small, but moose can be HUGE and can definitely put a damper on your trip. In New Hampshire that same day we saw a car that had hit a moose... it did not look pretty... ambulance and police were on their way and traffic was stopped in that direction. This was on the interstate!!
Maybe its because my dark green van blends in so well against that pure white snow...but...was it just me or does everyone driving in Maine pull out right in front of you like you aren't even there? The speed limit in Maine is 55, not because of the moose, the curves, or the small towns, but because the law there is if a car is coming, wait till its almost on top of you, then pull out in front of it!
Brake for Moose. It could save your life. There are loads of these signs around, especially when you get out of the populated areas. Pay attention, and please try your darndest not to hit a moose, it will total your car. The moose will probably live.
This is gonna sound silly, but be careful when walking on rocky beaches, especially if it's damp or the tides recently gone out. It's very easy to take a nasty fall, and the landing won't be too soft, either!
Be careful the weather in Maine is always a little funny. Somethime foggy, somethimes sunny, somethimes you can see the sun, and when I was in Maine we had extremly hot. If you have a car you have to look around. Because the moose and the weather.
only a danger if you try to get up close and personal with this big guy. Find hi on route 1 north bound just befor Freeport
In Maine and most of New England, the weather is pretty unpredictable...
Snow in April is NOT that strange and don't be surprised if you get 82 degree weather in a couple of days.
