Maine Diner: Have Breakfast in a Famous Place

by Basaic Written Oct 8, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

$12 in July 2014. This is a casual looking diner that is well-known for having a great breakfast. Famous throughout Maine and New England. Since my motel had no breakfast, I stopped here. Both the service and the food was very good. Crowded though so allow plenty of time.

Favorite Dish: Try the Hot Sausage and Cheddar Omelet. It's great!

    Fisherman's Catch: Great Fresh Seafood

by Basaic Written Oct 8, 2014

$19 in July 2014. This is a casual looking seafood place inside and out. Looks kinda like a fishcamp. The staff are a bunch of cute girls in shorts, and the hostess was very attractive. They offer a variety of seafood dishes (much of it fried). Service was good and the food was very tasty. It seemed very popular and there was quite a line of people waiting when I left. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for seafood fans.

Favorite Dish: Fresh Baked Crumbed Haddock was excellent!

  • Yank's Franks: Delicious Hot Dogs! Great restaurant!

by HotDogGirl Written Jul 8, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you love great hot dogs, you're going to love Yank's Franks on Route 1 in Wells, Maine. Yank's grills its dogs and serves them on a buttered grilled roll. (They'll actually steam your dog if you prefer, but if you want a real taste sensation definitely go grilled.) They have several fresh toppings to choose from; you're going to have to go back many times to try them all. Don't forget the fries! Yank's also has burgers, chicken, pulled pork, chili and onion rings. Outdoor seating is available on their porch or under an umbrella on one of their picnic tables. Great food. Great service. Great overall experience.

Favorite Dish: The "Yank's Frank" is phenomenal. It's the best version of a Chicago dog I've ever had: Mustard, relish, onions, tomato, pickle and celery salt...all complemented by the buttery goodness of the grilled roll.

BILLY'S CHOWDER HOUSE: SEAFOOD BY THE SEA

    by Rich62 Updated Sep 11, 2009

A BIT PRICIER THAN SOME, BUT PLENTY GOOD and in good surroundings too. It overlooks the Rachael Carson Wildlife Refuge, and also Wells Harbor.

Favorite Dish: I don't remember, that was several years ago. However, people writing reviews seems to especially like their lobster stew and their chowder.

By the way, this is a place that also serves hamburgers ($8.99), if someone in your party is so inclined.

2009 SAMPLE PRICES: Bacon wrapped scallops appetizer $8.49
    Broiled salmon $18.99
    BBQ ribs half rack $15.99

  • The Maine Diner: Don't waste your time or your money

by lamarquess Written Mar 30, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We heard mixed reviews of their restaurant and checked out the views online. We decided to go anyway. There is nothing special about this place and the food is lousy. They make a big deal about their "homecooking" but sadly, no, the food is the pits. And the staff, I don't know, not impressive in the least. It's like they try too hard to be nice or overplay the role. Or maybe it was just uncomfortable from the beginning. I never ate in a place where you sat one foot away from the table next to you. Talk about claustaphobic. I've been in many diners, this one I will never go back to.

  • Litchfields Restaurant: Drive by and do not stop

by lisamay Written Jan 1, 2009

The parking lot was empty in the summer and that should have been a tip to not go in. The service was friendly but the food was terrible. Portions were very small and my shrimp was not fully cooked. They refused to take the plate back and correct the problem. The best tip I have is to just drive by and don't even bother to stop.

Favorite Dish: Sad to say but the only thing I like was the tea.

    Litchfields: Disappointed

by SteveOSF Updated Aug 26, 2007

We traveled the main drag of Wells and selected this place for dinner. They had a talented pianist providing pleasant background music. The service was fine. However, the food was a disappointment. In the event we hit had a bad night, I'll just say that the food was terrible, and leave it at that.

Maine Diner: Popular and crowded but worth it

by Minstrelette Written Oct 2, 2005

If you go in the summer, expect a wait up to an hour. It's worth it though. While you're waiting, you can check out the gift shop next door- they give you a beeper for when a table's available. The service is quick though, so once you get a table, you won't have a long wait for the food. And the food quite good for typical New England beach town food. If you go during the off-season, there's no wait at all.

Favorite Dish: Arnold Lobster Roll- I don't like mayonaise, so I usually don't get lobster rolls, but this one is just warm lobster on a grilled roll- delicious
Indian Pudding- great flavour and really warms you up

Big Daddy's: Ice Cream and/or hot dogs

    by Rich62 Written Sep 11, 2009

Very good ice cream, about 35 flavors from which to choose. My friend had a hot dog and it looked good also.

Favorite Dish: I had some sort of coffee-flavored (jamoca?) ice cream, which was delicous.
