York Beach Things to Do

  • Nubble Lighthouse

Cape Neddick Lighthouse, better known as Nubble Light can be seen from many spots along the coast in York, Maine. The best view is from Sohier Park which offers an unobstructed view with perfect photo opportunities. You can sit on a bench and watch the waves crashing on the rocks, the seagulls coasting overhead and the occaisonal scuba diving group....

  • Go to the lighthouse in the winter

It may be cold and windy ( bundle up good ) but lighthouses and rocky Mainecoasts look even more interesting when fresh snow has fallen over theseThis one was taken in February 1998

  • Walk near the Nubble Lighthouse

York Beach is divided into two beaches - Short Sands at the north and Longs Sands to the south. The beaches are divided by a peninsula that houses the Nubble Lighthouse, which you can visit if you take a few minutes to drive or walk to it. I also suggest walking around the rocky shore just south of the lighthouse, which offers a nice trail through...

  • "Nubble" lighthouse

A prim and proper little lighthouse on tiny island a stone's throw from the mainland. It looks like the only way out there is a suspended basket on a cable. They lit it up for Christmas, and from Sohier Park (on the mainland side) it and the light-decorations all up and down the coast were beautiful.

  • LONG SANDS Beach

Long Sands is the bigger of the two local beaches, hence the name. Long Sands has a designated surfing area. There are hotels and houses for rent across the street. Parking is more limited than it is at Short Sands. There is metered parking available along Route 1A along the beach. Restrooms are available at the Bathhouse. Lifeguards on duty end of...

  • SHORT SANDS Beach

Short Sands Beach is next to the downtown area of York Beach. It is the smaller of the two local beaches, hence the name. There is plenty of parking, but be sure to bring lots of quarters. Cops on bicycles are quick to give tickets the second your time is up on the meter. There are a bathhouse, outdoor showers, a playground and basketball...

  • York's Wild Kingdom

York's Wild Kingdom offers a variety of family rides, paddle boats, an 18 hole miniature golf course, a petting zoo, scenic picnic grounds and even a Haunted House. It's a bit of a tourist trap and certainly not a great amusement park. It's fun enough to bring the kids to.Not worth the price in my opinion.Current prices as of this writing...

  • Fun-O-Rama arcade

Fun-O-Rama is an arcade in an archaic looking building. It's right on Short Sands Beach which makes it popular with families and local teens alike. There are both modern and older video games. The place gets noisy and hot. Even die-hard older video game fans can only stay for a short time. Children don't seem to mind the dumpy atmosphere though.

  • YORK'S WILD KINGDOM

This is a good zoo for people of all ages. There is a petting zoo where you can feed deer, goats and other animals. You can see monkeys, cougers, kangaroos and various other animals and birds. There are rides such as Go-Carts, bumper cars and paddle boats. Stay and watch the elephant show.

  • Nubble Lighthouse with a full moon

If you're in this area when there's a full moon, you should go during the moonrise. It's a beautiful site, to see the full moon rise over the lighthouse while watching the waves crash on the rocks.

  • Ghostly Tours

In York Village there is a tour that goes around a block or two in the village with a man in a grim reaper costume. He tells great local ghost stories and supersitions. If you're into ghosts or even slightly believe, I would take advantage of this.

  • $23 Clam Strips Dinner

I am a seasonal camper at Eatons in York and I dine at many restaurant s in the area from May to October. I decided to try Fox's with my wife and a guest on Sat Oct 1st 2011. I ordered the $23 fried clam diiner and got three whole belly clams on top of a pile of clam strips. I asked to see the Mgr or Owner and was told she was not available but...

  • Only Good for a View

You go there for the view - unfortunately, we were seated in the back corner, with no view except through people's heads. Staff was nice, but the food was lacking. The lobster bisque was the consistency of pudding. Wouldn't go back - just because it's a landmark doesn't mean it's good. Nothing.

  • Great food, great view

The history on the menu says it began as a hotdog stand in the 60s; it's grown into a pretty, charming restaurant in the middle of a sweep of southern Maine coast. It looks like there's a patio (I was there in winter), but even in the dining room the view of the beach, lighthouse to rocky outcrops, is great. Baked artichoke hearts, lobster...

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you go downtown a bit, you'll find that there are lot of quaint little bars that overlook the ocean. It's nice to have a drink or two and then walk on the beach. They're also nice places to meet people who live in York year-round, or who are seasonal visitors.

York Beach Shopping

  • Native American

I'm not much of a shopper, it takes a unique store to make me a repeat customer. The Little Bull is the only store in York, Maine that I visit every time I'm in the area. • FLO's HOTDOGS

This is a restaurant that serves hotdogs. I put it in this category because it's a short drive from the main York attractions and it's the most unique eating place I've ever been to. I hate hotdogs but my boyfriend likes them and this place always looks packed. So we went to Flo's. This place is delightfully ODD. It's only open 11-2, weird hours....

Bocce is a popular activity on Long Sands Beach. There's not enough space on Short Sands to sling your balls... (sorry, couldn't resist). What is Bocce?
